I agree with that. There has to be some baseline before they throw an official out there and part of it needs to be a basic understanding and knowledge of the rules past out of bounds.

So that means they should get guys that don't know the rules? Tell that to the kid that will never play above JV in his life.

Here's where I stand as a guy that has coached a lot of games at a lot of different levels. I tell my kids to not speak or gesture negatively towards the referee. However, it's part of my job to represent the view point of myself and my team. Now, if the kid is begging for a call or upset about something stupid, I'll tell him to play or take them out. But if they have a point, I'm going to let the official know. The best approach I've had an official take with me is when they let me know "hey coach, this is what I saw" because at least I know where they are coming from then. I've told them after that 'well I disagree,' but at least I know. What I never did like was "I didn't see it coach" because it begged for me to respond with "Well what are you out there for then?" which was overly negative, but that is a coach's thought in the heat of the moment. However, "I only saw _______" I am receptive to because it explains a point of view. The issues I've had with officials are a result of a few things: 1. Don't know the rules (I think this is cheating the kids) 2. Don't communicate well 3. Plainly not giving their best effort (out of position, not sharp or seemingly 'not into' the game, etc.) The T's I've gotten, I've either basically been asking for out of frustration, or because one of those three things are happening,and I let the official know that I'm not happy about it. I have had one time where the last play I felt a kid was fouled shooting and it went uncalled in a one point game as time expired. I was rather animated to let the official know my thoughts on it before he could reach the locker room. To this day, I'm sure the kid was fouled. However, I was out of line in the way I addressed it, and the following week, I took the steps to find the official's contact information, and apologized for my actions. Do I think I should have let him know that I believe the call was blown? Sure. But it's all in the way you go about things.

This may be true, but that's a two way street. Especially the non varsity guys. Can't tell you the # of times when I've seen JV or freshman guys simply not have sufficient knowledge of the game... Granted some of it might've been tough calls, but I've seen guys award bonus FT's after charges.... #cmonman

Joe Tucker is heading up the youth league and has done a nice job getting #'s up, especially in young divisions, for Dayton. So the cavalry is coming. It just might take a couple years.

Don't tell the D3 schools that the conference title doesn't matter.... Everyone needs something to play for. And if you were paying attention there have been some outstanding games with conference champion implications. Silver Grove/Ludlow last year. Ludlow/Villa the year before. Ludlow/Dayton before that.... Heck I remember back about 5 years ago when Beechwood still played D3 and lost their first conference game in several years to Dayton. That was a big deal. Pretty sure it made the 'big' story in the sports page. You get some great games in the nkac d3. You just have to pay attention. That title means something no doubt.

Taping for 'preventative' means is a waste IMO. Supported by trainers I've worked with and know. Many athletic budgets aren't large enough to tape all players every day for practice. Taping just for games is a bad idea also, as you aren't familiar with the 'feel.' I had a coach that didn't allow receivers to wear gloves unless they wore them in practice for the same reason. Too many kids tape because they think it looks cool. Especially 'wrists' tapes... Most do nothing.

If Grove ever consolidated, Dayton would make the most sense. Demographically and geographically. I was under the impression that for awhile SG youngsters played for Dayton in the youth football league. There are already a lot of connections among those 2. Now, I don't think Grove is closing any time soon barring being forced to. But that's just my two sense.

Heard from someone that has some knowledge of the situation and he says that while this year could be a good year for Silver Grove, the future is bleak as they just don't have the #'s, and that the issue could be having enough to field a team.

I can answer that one for you. They would rather play in their own stadium. History. Pride. All that jazz.... In the case of Dayton, granted I haven't been up there in a couple years, but it seems as if the field is top notch in terms of grass fields these days. Holds water well. Doesn't wear too much. It's just the concrete facility around it needs improvement.

I would love to wait but with my job it's really not an option to not have a working cell phone for an extended period of time. I looked at the HTC One, but it seemed like the biggest plus to that was the music aspect? I could be wrong. I'm coming off an android that really wasn't a bad phone, but wasn't near the quality I paid for it. I have an iPad, but admittedly don't utilize it anywhere near its full extent. Girlfriend is team iPhone to the max. The reason i tend to lean that way is because I know in the times she's had any issues apple has had great customer service. That was lacking with my former phone and service provider. A couple of my good buddies swear by the S5. They have s4 and are waiting to upgrade. I tend to lean that way because I know the bigger screen would be nice for a lot of reasons. My Android was a far bigger screen than the iPhone.

That actually happened before. There is some rule in play now that each get to change once I believe. Unsure who has to designate R/L initially though.
