Those of you that know me know that my son switch hits.

 

I got a text from him earlier today and it was pretty unique so I thought I'd share.

 

His team is playing in a 18u tournament in Ohio.

 

He came to bat against a lefty pitcher so he bats RH and doubles to left.

 

Next at bat he faces the same pitcher but the kid is now throwing right handed.

 

So my son bats LH and get another hit off him.

 

I'm sure that's probably happened somewhere before but pretty rare. I just wish I was there to have some video.

That actually happened before. There is some rule in play now that each get to change once I believe. Unsure who has to designate R/L initially though.

By rule the pitcher has to choose before the AB which hand he will use to pitch.

I was wondering about the rules concerning when the pitcher can change throwing arms.

I think it was Creighton Univ that had a similar pitcher and one of the glove manufacturers made him a glove with two thumbs and two webs so he could switch during the game. I wonder if when he was younger in leagues that had maximum pitch count rules if they kept two counts in him ie one for his left arm, one for his right arm.

You are correct. I can't remember the kids name but heas from Creighton and he was drafted by the Yankees a few years back in the draft. He could throw right handed in the upper 80s and top out at 90 while throwing sidearm when pitching Lefthanded and he as throwing around 80 or so there.

Played with a kid in high school that could do this.

He was telling me down there the rule is once you switch hands it's like you are a brand new pitcher and can't go back. I don't know if that's true or not, but I thought that was interesting.

Did he he mean you can't go back for that batter? If so, that's the rule. IF he meant can't switch the rest of the game then I find that hard to believe.

He said game, I thought it was hard to believe too. The pitch count and innings counted together too. So if you threw 9 innings with your right arm, it was like you threw with your left as well, and had to have the required days rest even though you didn't pitch with the other arm.
