  1. I am soooo hoping Trinity beats Moeller. I can't stand Moeller. Grew up around that area and had a few of our better athletes leave our school to go there to be with Fuzzy Faust. Great school, great tradition - I just dislike them VERY much!
  2. The first time I ever saw the "take a knee" thing was my son's soccer teams about ten years ago. Playing little league and high school football 30+ years ago, we never took a knee during an injury time out. To us it was just another time out - a chance to rest, get some water and listen to the coach. No disrespect was meant, it was just another part of the game. It's kind of funny how things are today compared to the "old days." When I played, we looked at the other team as the enemy and our coaches made us hate them. BUT, we always played clean and were good sports. So while there was no before or after game fraternization, and we rarely helped the other guy up, we would not take cheap shots. Seems today, there are more cheap shots, but there's this veil of political correctness where they go through the approved motions to show they are good sports. Just my .02...
  3. From the Ft Thomas Jr Football League rulebook: The FTJFL Executive Board has decided that, during the 2011 season, 7/8 games will be governed entirely by KHSAA rules with the exception of practices, playing time, 20 point rule, weight limits and PAT (see below). This was done with the understanding that Head Coaches would run the Highlands offense and a 3 down lineman defensive scheme. The Executive Board will determine if a Head Coach is not adhering to these guidelines and, if necessary, take corrective action. As far as the original question of this thread, I agree with the notion that keeping kids interested is key. I've seen a lot of 7/8 studs lose interest.
  4. I wasn't even at the game and didn't see the play. I was just answering a question about a rule, not the play in question.
  5. If the knee goes down before the ball breaks the plane of the GL, then he is down - no TD. To clarify, the ball must break the plane of the GL before the player is down (knee touching the ground) for it to be a touchdown. Does high school spot the ball where the ball is when the knee touches down (like NFL), or do they spot it at the point where the knee touches down?
  6. Really glad to hear this about Hayes. Watching him last year I got the impression he was pretty easy to bring down - didn't have the punishing mentality like he did on defense. Never been any doubt about what he could do once you get him out in space, but didn't show me much up the gut. So, just glad to know he's finally bringing that attitude to the offensive side of the ball.
  7. Highlands beat CovCath - again. Good.
  8. I think you pull your starters when you're up big. I think Elder and Ryle will be enough to get them in shape for the playoff run.
  9. Dale is anything but clueless. I've been around him a few times. He is the most positive, optimistic person you'll ever meet. There's a reason they call him "Smiley." He can take any situation (including a 134-6 defeat) and turn it into a positive, learning experience. His record speaks for itself. And as far as putting in the 2's before it gets to a 45 point lead, most coaches want their 1's to get at least 2 quarters of playing time. Standard operating procedure.

  12. Seriously?? The campus and stadium are five minutes off of I-75. ??????????
  13. Every home game has a theme. Last week was blackout, this week western.
  14. Honestly, not good in my opinion. Never really ran a route hard. Just kind of cruised up field, like he was just taking the defender deep to take him out of the play. But he didn't seem like he was hustling, or was very intense. After the first couple of times I thought that maybe they were setting the defender up for a blazing fly pattern, but Towles never even looked his way.
  15. Towles didn't run the ball once. Nursing an injury? Mueller trying to limit Towles exposure to injury? Wassup?
  16. Prayers going out for comfort during what will be a tough time.
  17. I'm pretty sure this is where it comes from, not from an actual event in recent history. I think it comes from the story of a princess who was told that there was a great famine in her land and people were dying due to a lack of bread. Her answer was, "Let them eat cake." Cake was only available to the rich and royal, but she was so protected and oblivious she couldn't understand why the peasants didn't just eat cake instead of bread. So, a cake eater is one who is snobby and so stuck up they aren't even aware of the "bad side of life." All the above is simply an explanation, not a description of people from Fort Thomas. As a matter of fact, almost all of my interaction with true "cake eaters" (those born and raised in FT) has been positive.
  18. I wonder if there is any other football division in the nation where the school with the smallest boy's enrollment in their division is ranked tops in the state (in their division)? http://www.khsaa.org/football/realignment/20112014/2011-2014 School Listing.pdf Amazing. It will be even more amazing if they win the state championship. I know many (me included) get jaded about HHS's success and expect them to be a powerhouse, but what they do with their small enrollment is pretty impressive.
  19. Players are given tests for cognitive and motor skills while they are healthy. This establishes a baseline. If/when an athlete suffers a concussion, the same tests are given. He/she cannot return to play until they can get results that match the baseline test. As the parent of a young athlete who has suffered concussions, I have seen where he appears to be symptom-free three weeks after his injury, but the testing still shows he has not healed. I would urge every parent of a player that has suffered a blow to the head (yes, getting your "bell rung" is usually a concussion) to have them tested at a sportsmedicine facility. Fortunately I am close to Cincinnati Childrens. The testing they do goes beyond asking "Do you still have a headache?" Be very careful of blows to the head. Getting a concussion while not healed from the last one can have devastating effects, and it may take weeks (like 3-5 or more weeks) to be fully healed.
  20. Not sure if it's required, but Highlands offers it for free (or very cheap), I believe
  21. Okay, so the NFL is back and going to play. Is Cris not coaching now, or does it just cut into the amount of time he can spend coaching? Anybody got the scoop?
  22. I guess if Dale and the soccer coach can't agree they'll just go to the Athletic director for a ruling...
  23. I think schools love recruiting guys like Pike. They recruit him as a QB, but know in the back of their minds that if that doesn't work out, an athletic kid like him can be used elsewhere. A lot of schools recruit athletes and then sort out the positions later depending on circumstances. That said, I think Towles is more of a pure QB prospect. He has a better arm than Pike and has more maturity/poise. Towles lacks the speed and quickness to be a college WR or TE, in my opinion. As others have said, it will be interesting to follow their senior years, as well as their college careers...
  24. I know Hayes has been playing RB with the varsity, but watching him last year, he seemed more suited for defense. When running the ball, he was incredible in open space (kick returns, sweeps), but in traffic seemed to go down fairly easy. On defense, he was brutal - hitting guys and cleaning their clocks. His defensive attitude was "take no prisoners." If he could capture some of that "punishing" attitude with the ball in his hands, he would be better served as a running back.
  25. Schutt is joining Xenith in questioning the helmet testing/rating that VT did. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/05/13/helmet-maker-schutt-joins-xenith-in-questioning-virginia-tech-study/ More sour grapes, or do they have a point? Personally, after looking into the Xenith, it seems to make the most sense to me, as far as protecting against concussions. I'm not a doctor or a bio-engineer. Is there anyone on here that is qualified and could offer some insight?
