  1. Pretty solid list carguy. HC's soph. is Jaden Jillian. HC lost their setter, Tori Verville, and outside hitter, Karly Reid to graduation. Might be a rebuilding year for the Indians, but, Jaden is the real deal! Beechwood will rely heavily on Robin Hood. Sophmore setter, Kyra Spahn, could help get her a lot of kills both from front row and back row attacks. Simon Kenton could be a big surprise this year depending on how they adjust to their new coach. Scott will have Lauren O'Conner in the middle. Their offense will run through her and the other middle(I forget her name). Just like every year, defense is the key to winning championships. That why I think Notre Dame will be the heavy favorite. Libero, Leslie Schellhaas, is the best at her position in all of Northern Ky. St Henry will have to figure out who their setters will be. Erin Fortner, Cayla Flood, and Stephanie Gurren will be competing for the job. If they run a 6-2 with Flood and Gurren then they will have to run a rotation defense because Gurren puts up a small block on the right side. If it is Flood and Fortner, then they can run a perimiter D. Coach Kaiser will figure it out for sure. She always does. They have 3 nice freshman coming in with Rachel Fortner, Abby Bessler, and Abby Scherrer.
  2. Notre Dame is the clear-cut favorite in the 9th. Leslie Schelhaus. Jamie Wulfolk and Morgan Ebner will bring the leadership the Pandas need. Two big losses for NDA are setter Jenna Schriver(graduated) and Ashley Robinson(ACL). They should have enough to make it back to state. St Henry will be good with Erin Fortner, Caela Flood and Taryn Ward, but will they have enough fire power to take the region? Time will tell. The 10th will be up for grabs. Campbell, Highlands and NCC will fight it out in October for the crown. Too close to call on this one.
  3. Definately JV, but not sure about varsity. At any other school she would be on varsity.
  4. That is 100% true. An "overlap" or "out of rotation" is recorded as an ace for the serving team.
  5. I don't think they are made up, but, I do question if the stat people know what an assist, kill, ace, block, etc. really are. I believe one year I read where a team had 4 players leading in kills, each with more than 10 a game. I'm not the best in math, but, I think that would be more than 25 points. I don't think there is any state regulation on keeping stats, but, it wouldn't hurt to have a clinic about it.
  6. The "Fab 59" refers to prepvolleyball.com list of the top 59 frosh in the nation. Not only did Jayden make the list, but, Taylor Snyder of NCC did also. This was the same list that Alyx Schulte and Kaela Freppon appeared on a few years ago.(They had pretty good HS careers!)
  7. This year sophmore class had some nice players, lead by Chris Kelly. Like a previous poster said, Jake Cain will be battling for the QB spot (also linebacker). Kyle Tallon is one of the hardest hitters on the team (he was a wedge buster this year on kick off team). Little known, Mike Froendhoff rushed for 178 yrds on 12 carries this year. Brennan Daunt saw action at tight end and linebacker(intercepted a pass for a TD). Brian Doyle may be the starting safety and WR next year. Jake Geisler has a great shot at offensive line and Jack Gruenschlaeger (6'9" 280) also O line.
  8. The photo of NewCath's kicker, Chris Grosser, is incorrect. The photo shown is NewCath soccer player, Chris Grosser.
  9. I believe Frank caught a TD pass in the National Championship game as a Jr. He switched to baseball in his senior year a Notre Dame. I still see him around town. He is still huge. I think he is a dealer at one of the casinos in Lawrenceburg, Ind.
  10. Newport Central Catholic has named the replacement for long time coach Jenny Mertle. Vicki Fleissner will take over as the new head coach of the Thoroughbreds. She has been the JV and varsity assistant with Mertle for 20 years. I am very excited for Vicki (who is a long time friend of mine) and the NCC volleyball program. My daughter will be a freshman next year and she too is excited by the news. It is still unknown who Coach Fleissner will have on her staff. I would imagine that 18 year varsity assistant Scott Froendhoff and freshman coach Alicia (Donnermeyer) Heller will be back on the NCC bench. It will be a rebuilding year for the Breds, but, there will be a solid foundation of young players inwhich to build upon. 4 freshmen got varsity experience this year. Congrats to Vicki!:dancingpa
  11. NCC doesn't have a radio station broadcast. Heck, we don't even have our own football field. We rent Newport High School's field for home games.

  13. Yes, there are 3 DI players and possibly a DII player as well. Don't forget about Freshman, Taylor Snyder, who will also play in college someday! I have followed NCC volleyball for a loooonnnngggg time. This is by far the best NewCath volleyball team ever. For a single "A" school with approximately 200 girls to go up against a Louisville Mercy(500-600 girls) who is ranked #3 in the nation, and put a scare into them, is quite impressive.
  14. Congrats to Coach Jenny Mertle for winning her 700th career volleyball match against Logan Co. That was also her last victory. She is retiring after 30 years of coaching. The KHSAA honored Mertle before the state finals last night and she received a well earned standing ovation from the 2000+ people in attendance. Her very last match was against the the state's #1 team and #3 in the nation, Mercy. The Breds played Mercy very tough and hung with them until the very end, but, came up short. There was so much emotion after the her final match against Mercy that the NewCath faithful didn't leave the floor for nearly 45 minutes after the match ended. The NCC volleyball team saved their best performance for last yesterday. They didn't lose....they got beat. Yes, there is a difference!:thumb:
  15. One name I did here was Notre Dame's outside hitter, Morgan Ebner. Congrats to Morgan and NDA and the rest of the All tourny team.
  16. Another 9th Region showdown between St Henry and Notre Dame. Hopefully the 2 players from St Henry that were sick earlier this week will be healthy enough to play in the finals.
  17. Sacred Heart beat Assumption 25-14, 25-21:eek: Now the only question is, "Who will they play in the finals?". I don't see any team in the upper bracket that is capable of challenging them, but, thats why they play the games.
  18. She has loads of potential. At this point in her career, she is farther along than her sister, who now plays at Bellermine. Congrats to Lauren!
  19. They are not called the Lady Thoroughbreds. At least not the volleyball team. Coach Mertle always tells the announcers to say the Thoroughbreds. If they said that, she will correct them tomorrow night.:thumb:
  20. Wow, he had a great game. On his first 3 carries he had close to 100 yrds. If he didn't get 200 for the game, he got awfully close.
  21. Boone and Ryle 31st district (championship is tonight) St Henry (champ) and Lloyd 32nd disrtict Notre Dame (champ) and Beechwood 33rd district Scott (champ) and Simon Kenton 34th district
  22. Touchtone has finally decided to sponsor an All "A" Classic volleyball state tournament. Sounds good doesn't it! But wait, there's a catch. The guy who organized the basketball is also doing the volleyball. Without doing any research with the volleyball coaches around the state, he decided to use the basketball regions instead of the established volleyball regions:confused: He also decided to schedule it on the same weekend as the Louisville Invitational Volleyball Tournament. Which means the 5 top "A" schools, St Henry, NCC, Lou. Holy Cross, Lou. Presentation, and Owensboro Catholic will probably miss it. What is he thinking? It seems like he doesn't want to be bothered by organizing it and did everything for his own convience.
  23. The 10th will boil down to NCC and Campbell. There is a little known team that could give either team fits and that is Greenwood. They have beat local teams Ryle, Boone, and Simon Kenton. They have a middle blocker that switches to the outside to hit. Apparently, according to the 3 local coaches, she is the real deal. If she gets hot, watch out. But, if you can block her early she will start to think too much.
