Then Volleyball it is . . . U can't stall in Volleyball, both teams have an equal chance to win each point, you compete head to head with each other, not against the clock. There's more drama, excitement, and hold-your-breath moments throughout the entire match than there is during a girls basketball game. I'm sure you and others who have been to both would agree - it's more fun to watch NDA/St. Henry/NCC/Ryle etc go head to head in volleyball than basketball.

I think there is some really nice young talent in the Highlands lower grades and you cant lose your starting PG and compete the same. Losing Abner was huge and having a collective group running the point is not the same.

 

From what I understand, if the Birds wouldnt have gotten called for traveling on a converted layup and if Partin's 3 goes in they could have been in position to win the game. They also missed a wide open layup.....I hate to say coulda woulda shoulda but the fact that they were right there obviously means Coach Richey's strategy worked.

Seems like we hear that almost every season. I do agree with you on the strategy part. I know what you're saying about the point position, but I'm going to posture that NDAs season doesn't get destroyed if, say a Chandler Clark goes down. Impactful? yes. Devestating ? Not to the degree HHS experienced.

So what I'm thinking my "take away" from this discussion is: if NDA had pressured and forced Highlands to play, then the teams would have been competing. But because NDA choose not to, Jaime is a bad coach, human being, violated the spirit of the game, deprived her kids of the most important moment of their lives, etc., etc., etc.

 

Crazy things happen in every sport. Not just basketball. Maybe Jaime was hoping for a crazy thing happening. Like hitting a last minute shot and winning the game 10-9. I think the last sentence of your post is spot on and is exactly why folks should back off. It might be boring to some; it might violated the spirit of the game to some, but the bottom line is that Jaime obviously felt that stall ball gave her team the best chance of winning. Which should be the end of the discussion concerning her decision.

 

Now a discussion about instituting a 45 second clock or even a 1 minute clock would be of merit.

 

After this instance, I think it makes a great case for a 45 second shot clock. I am not sure what the cost to each school would be to install shot clocks.

What if they hiked the ball and just ran around behind the line of scrimmage for a quarter and the defense let them. Would that be a good game?

What happened in this game just violated the spirit of the game and it was wrong for the players, families and fans.

I am not going after Ritchey on this other than wondering if this really was the only hope Highlands had of beating NDA. She played within the rules and NDA's coach let her get away with it. If she felt it was the only chance her team had, then I can't fault her and it almost worked. But I do think stall ball is not good for the sport and high school needs to institute some rules to prevent it.

Fortunately, getting my fill of volleyball with club ball. Only 6 months to go before a return to the sunbaked NKY gyms for school ball. May have to poke my head into BOKC this weekend to see what all the fuss is about.

I saw a tweet today that said Highlands only took one shot in 3 quarters? Is that right?

In the first game between the two schools the score was 59 to 31. (28 point differential)

In this game the score was 13-8. (5 point differential)

Well, either one team improved tremedously within the last 50 days or so, or one coaching staff improved tremendously within the last 50 days.

Not sure who made the call for the Highlands, but it sounds like it almost produced a win.

If there are player's parents from Highlands grumbling from this, my suggestion is to have your daughter pick her game up, so the coaching staff doesn't have to resort to this to prevent what would probably have been another lopsided loss.

The biggest loser of the night was the water girl for Highlands, not once did she ever have to hydrate her teammates. She was cheated out of shinning her last game as a water girl!

 

I think she is only a junior, she will be back.
