Last year after NCC won against HC they went on to rock their way to the state championship. Holy Cross gave them their toughest game last year. I see Holy Cross doing the same this year. The NCC was a great game. HC got a gut check and won. I dont see them losing the rest of the way.

 

Not good to compare what NCC did last year to this year. NCC was on a completey other level last year than this years teams. They were just that good, and that is why they ended up kinda making it look easy on their way to the State Championship. I do think Holy Cross will end up winning state, but I don't think it will be as smooth of a ride as NCC made it look last year.

Keep your pants on! I'm sure they are working on it. Better yet call Holy Cross and leave your number for Coach Koz to call you so you are the first to know.

As MeanBird asked, I also would love to see some analysis on Somerset from a fan's point of view - offense, defense, special teams. Who are the ones who get their number called a lot? What are their keys to victory from their point of view? On a lighter note, what is the origin of their mascot - the Briar Jumpers?

The Somerset High School Team that took the field on that Saturday in October 1916, was optimistic, even though they had been greeted by 700 fans of the Louisville High School, with accompanying good nature jeers and shouted predictions of the gruesome fate they were going to encounter. The Louisville Boys High School had established an impressive record and was predicted to win the game by several touchdowns. Much to blue-clad Louisville's surprise, that purple and gold Somerset team showed NO MERCY. When the last play had been played, and that last whistle sounded, the score board displayed the unbelievable score of SOMERSET 51, LOUISVILLE 6. The tale of that days events were fully described in Louisville papers for days to come. The story, told in simple terms, is that a certain young man by the name of "Gooch", a sorrel topped mountaineer by the name of "Roberts", and a fully mature Irishman by the name of "McMillan" created high school football history on the banks of the Ohio. Louisville sportswriters were knocking themselves out trying to describe the drubbing that was perpetrated. One writer, Mr. Johnny Head, who had fully recovered from the shock, was frantically searching for some previous occurrence with which to compare the extraordinary athletic speed and skill used to evade Louisville tacklers. That is when he remembered the story of Uncle Remus, the briar patch, and the elusive ways the Somerset team had of getting around or evading, obstructions. He also remembered the expression "Bawn and bred in de briar patch". Tough one to pick; Somerset is going to be tough and I think that HC will be too, especially if their defense plays as it has been since the start of the playoffs. I think this is a close game and whoever wins goes on to win state. Good luck to both teams!

I am not saying that is wrong. However I wonder if they were just assuming NCC would win, and put Newport as the place they will play at. It will be neat if it is at Newport though and I think it will help Holy Cross being on turf.

What kind of offense does Somerset run and who are their playmakers? Defense who are the guys, as well.

Jumpers in the past have been a heavy passing team, but this year they are more run than in the past. No Superstar runner, just a lot of kids getting carries and doing whatever it takes. On D Jumpers have fairly good speed, they held Hazard (0), Glasgow (14) and Breathitt (20) to their lost point totals during the Regular season. Unfortunately Somerset was trying to find their idenity on Offense during that run of games and lost two of them.

 

Overall this is a pretty balanced team on both sides of the ball, not flashy at all. They just figure out how to get it done.

As of now I have heard it is being played at Newport but I know the other option they were talking about was Scott! But as of now it is Newport.

I am going with my Alma Mater, Somerset 22-21.

Have not seen Holy Cross play. Somerset has great team speed. Couple real nice players and a lot of above Avg. players. Team is not Flashy or Cocky. They just get it Done. Winner of this Game will win 2A Championship. I pick Somerset 31-28
