Trinity just has destroyed all of their teams in Kentucky, and it doesn't look any better next year, look at the scores even against St X, how long will this go on? Isn't Oak Hills a national prep school for basketball, why doesn't the Rocks go national Prep school and dorm the players and play who ever they want? The scores do not lie. Trinity has a great facility and support system that draws kids from all over the Louisville area and southwest Indiana not a town of 25000 which also supplies a high percentage of the athletes for Newport Catholic. Trinity offers 'inner city' scholarships. Check the Zip Code of their players. I haven't seen that data but would find that information enlightening. I may change my opinion then. The best team in Ky is Trinity, but the best program(by far) is the Highlands program year in year out. Developes the most with less. One fifth the class size of Trinity and it is a public school. So, model football programs after the Fort Thomas/Highlands system and these games and playoffs will get better.

Amen! No way They should play these games. 2, 3, and 4 seeds don't deserve to be in the playoffs. Oh wait isn't Boone a 4 seed and Holy Cross a 2 seed. Oops, scratch that.

 

I don't think anyone has ever said 2 seeds shouldn't make the playoffs. The 6A northern KY this year was a little different this year and there was parity with no team undefeated in district. I think you would need to look at the scores for all the #4 vs #1 seeds to make a true assessment.

I have said it before, the worst part of high school sports is that adults are involved. They can suck the enjoyment out of most any experience.

The mathamatics of playoffs and post season makes this a difficult issue. You need things grouped in 2s, 4s and 8s to make good pairings. The current system is a 6 x 8 x (4,5,6), 192 setup. 6 classes, 8 districts per class with 4-6 teams in each district, 192 teams make the playoffs.

 

Going to 5 classes you would need this setup to roughly replicate the current approach - 5 x 8 x (5, 6, 7), 160 teams in playoffs. 5 classes, 8 districts per class with between 5 and 7 teams per district. 160 teams would make the playoffs. Thus, eliminating 32 teams from the playoff post season. Assuming the classes are evenly split (no special treatment of 1A and 5A in terms of numbers as done with current setup) it would be unlikely that 0-x teams would be in the playoffs.

 

Going back to 4 classes you would likely need this setup - 4 x 8 x (7,8), 128 teams make the playoffs. This would be almost a college like system where you would need to win about half your games to get into the post season. This seems to go against the current thought of more is better in the playoffs.

 

Reducing classes reduces travel - that is mathematical fact. In the days of $3+ a gallon gas this should be a consideration. As noted may games were not well attended - part of that had to be driven by travel costs and multi-hour drives for round 1 and 2 games. Look at Bell County as a clear example of the travel requirements placed on teams with these 'stretched out' districts and regions!

 

Is 6 too many - probably so, is 4 too few - many would argue that easily. Is 5 classes at least reasonable? Yes. Go to 5 classes, expand the district sizes by 1 or 2 teams, reduce the playoff pool by 32 teams. Reduce or eliminate 0-10 teams. And reduce travel (and associated costs) of schools and fans.

 

Something needs to be done to improve the current setup.

This is not true. It has been pointed out too many times to count that this isn't true. After a while it becomes hard to believe that people repeat these things because they don't know any better. It starts to look like a willful false statement.

I think everyone has foggy memories. If we go back and check scores, we would see that a large majority of playoff games including title games and state semifinal games are not close games. My guess is less than 1 of 4 playoff games from the semis on are games with a final score 14 points or less. And I am saying go back as far as you want historically. If scratch43 can add in the semi-finals, I think those numbers change a lot. Add in the rounds before that and they get close to where we are right now.

 

It's not a foggy memory - it's no memory at all. I didn't follow KY high school football until the last few years. If you read what I said, I said "I think the scores are the result of the state of Ky football right now." This does not mean I thought that it was once competitive. i couldn't tell you whether it was or not.

Your post is full of misinformation about Trinity. And before you point fingers at any individual kids, examine the zip codes associated with any team in Louisville, public or private. Your theory won't hold up. Take a look at Trinity's website. If you do you'll find that much of what you post is impossible, especially class size...unless HHS class sizes average in single digits.

 

You also mention that HHS's community also "supplies" athletes to NC. Have you forgotten that Louisville is also home to St. X, Manual, Male, Ballard, Eastern, Seneca, PRP, J-Town, Central, Shawnee, Western, Atherton, Waggener, Butler...shoot...I may have missed one. I respectfully submit that Trinity's program is top notch...equal to, if not better than HHS.
