Ryle's onside kick when they were down 56

Featured Replies

Your down 56 you conceed, pack it up and go home..Ryle didn't try to win from the get go..So your telling me Warner was trying to teach his kids something in that game..Now thats funny..

Isn't every play a teaching moment? If I'm Dale, I'm thankful somebody tried to onside kick. It gives my kids a chance to prepare for it. Your trying to win a state championship, not run out the clock!!!

Your right..I'm wrong..

Down by 56 I see no issue, up 56 is a different story.

Totally agree with you on this.

Was this before or after Highlands threw a touchdown pass up 48+ ?

I give zero credence to the score. If you are up 48+, those kids deserve a chance to achieve success. As long as the backups are in, let them have the chance to do what they do. And if the opponent wants to onside kick, then so be it. As a coaching staff, and as a backup player, treat every play like it matters. Because at some point it will!

Highlands is the bar in NKY; Ryle wants to be the bar, hence all the games against Highlands. Highlands went back to showing the student who the teacher is once again.

If you are up big and want to practice one, then let the other team know you are going to do an onsides kick. I mean if you are going to kick it in a game, the other team almost always knows it is coming so you should simulate the conditions you will most likely be using it.

If you are down big, same thing unless you want to practice an onsides kick when the other team doesn't expect it.

No problem with it. I had no problem with Smith doing it against Highlands in the 2003 state game either. It's just another play. The opponent needs to execute to prevent it from being successful.

There is certainly a time to try it and time to not "practice" it. Up 56 is not the time. Down 56 is cool.

No problem with it whatsoever.

Why in the world is it classless to onside kick down by half a hundred points? Even if its against younger kids its good experience for the return team as well.

Very perplexing for me. I don't like it, and I would not have done it. But I see why he did it.

On a similar note, I once saw a school down 30 or 40 in the final minute, continue to blitz the second and third stringers of the winning team; call a timeout - not get guys in, but to try to score again as they would get the ball near midfield. That is classless.

Better than punting on third down for sure.

Or grounding the ball on 4th down..

Finally, a good post on here that everyone can agree on. LOL
