Exact words I heard standing down in the endzone from one of the nastiest defensive players to ever play at Highlands. They need to get that Red Dog Defense mentality back.

Your claim would only be valid if you think CCH played to the best of their abilities. They threw a pick. They missed a FG. They completely screwed up a 2 yard drive for a TD. Their D only forced one punt. They missed an open receiver on the last play of the game in the end zone for the W.

 

Both teams are watching films today realizing what they could have executed better. CCH played far from a "near perfect game."

It was 5-7 per play on Saturday. They were chunking the Birds D good. One thing I have noticed is I havent seen Dave Meadows on Highlands sidelines this year. I know he has been their Defensive Backs coach the past several years and was a master motivator. That guy produced some big time hitters at DB like Abner, Seidl, Rosenhagen, etc. Am I missing something here?

Disagree completely. IF HHS D was "gassed," it was because CCH was controlling tempo and line of scrimmage. This may ultimately lead to a change on the HHS O side of the ball. A little more "move the chains" philosophy like they were using on the last drive until the fumble gives HHS D a chance to rest. (That said, I think the HHS O will attempt to score whenever and however they feel like they can.)

I'm one of those followers who is nervous about every game. However, at this point in time I feel pretty good about a rematch if it happens. For the first time this year the Birds were tested by a good opponent on the opponent's home field. They passed! They will be tested again before any potential rematch which I think will help them continue to improve the areas that need attention. It has brought up an interesting question about how much the starting defense should continue to play in a blowout game. The offense obviously hasn't been affected by playing half of most of their games but could the defense need more playing time in these games?

I was showing we can all point out mistakes and neither team is going to claim they can play no better.

What can HHS do better next game and how do they do it ?

 

I've already been told that we should expect to see more passes to Sheehan and not just fly patterns.

 

I'm more interested in what we will see defensively from HHS. How do they account for CCH size ?

As to HHS missing tackles in this game, every team that faces Gabe Gray misses tackles. It isn't missing tackles. It is Gabe Gray breaking tackles.

Question for Birds Fans. Do they tinker w/ a four man front next game? I wasn't at the game, so the front and angles may not have been the issue. I just wonder since CovCath is so big up front, do you bring in another DLineman to take away angles to your LBs?

I was wondering the same thing. Last season, after the loss to Ryle, the Birds went with a 4 or 5 man front for both Johnson Central and Harlan County, but both of those teams were overwhelming running teams. Of course, with Bir's passing ability, it will be more difficult to go with extra down linemen, unless you know you are going to get to him, or at least move him out of the pocket.

 

The Elder game may be telling in what may be the strategy for a possible rematch, as the Panthers tend to have larger O Lines than most that Highlands will see.

All those things went in Highlands favor and they were still two inches away from losing. Not good.
