Once again for me a trap question. So if and I mean if HHS gets a marginal lead, he will put in his reserves and run his offense like he would from play 1. Now if people think Dale is going to put his 2nd team in and run between the tackles you may as well not attend Sat. Does him no good for next year's dev to let off the gas pedal. Honestly I think this game will be closer than some expect. Do I expect HHS to put up some points. You bet I do.....I'm just curious if CCH can somewhat match what Dale & Company has going on right now!!!

I'm assuming your reasoning behind Mueller considering tapping the breaks would be to not embarrass Cov Cath and thereby not give the Colonels reason to come in with a bigger chip on their shoulder in the playoffs? I can see where maybe, MAYBE that could play a small roll in a playoff matchup, but I think Cov Cath is groomed - particularly under this coaching staff - to always walk into Highlands games with a chip on their shoulder.

 

That being said, I've never known Dale to hold anything back at all against Cov Cath. I think he goes for every last point his team is capable of scoring.

I say that you send a message during the first half. If the game gets out of control, then you sub freely. Again, that's if there is flexibility in the outcome.

If you are the prohibitive favorite and you are coming off of a game from the previous season where the underdog had a chance to tie the game on the last play you HAMMER them the next time in order to remove any thought from their head that the rematch can be close. You want to let them know that the previous game was an aberration.

I agree with Clyde. You send a message and let them know they still have a long way to go to beat them.

Put it on them so that there is no doubt who is the boss. So when the playoffs come around they don't get any ideas they can play with you.

I would only open 2 pages of the play book and run nothing you will run in playoffs. HHS is so much better even with that it will be out of hand by half then out JV in the game.

I quit trying to figure out what Dale is going to do a long, long time ago. Every time I thought I had an idea what he was going to do, he did something else. If there is a more unpredictable, successful high school football coach in Ky, I haven't seen him.

Staying on point with the circumstances in your question, "flexibility" means HHS has a comfortable lead. If that is the situation, if I am Mueller I stay as basic as I can on offense with continuing to move the ball. If CCH starts figuring out how to get stops on plays, I go to the next wrinkle in the playbook to keep moving the ball. I would rather find out in this game what CCH can stop and what they can't stop than hold back and get a surprise in the playoffs.

I think Dale will try to make a point we can all hear easily. I would.

HA! 2 pages! Heck, Highlands only runs 5-6 plays. Now there is up to 6 players per play that could put their hands on the ball, that's where it gets dicey. It's a lot of fun to watch. I say you show who's boss......

 

 

 

 

 

According to that "Mafia" member I ran into last week, they are saying HHS will roll in this game. But after watching what the Colonels did to Beechwood, I'm thinking he was laying it on a little thick. If you catch my drift.

I have to respectfully disagree with CWB. The '08 game at Highlands started with a Collinsworth kickoff return for a TD and then things got worse. It was 54-0 at half. I don't recall Highlands converting many 3rd downs in the first half...they didn't have many. 1st down, 2nd down, 1st down, 1st down, touchdown. In my opinion, Dale let off the gas and may even have tapped the breaks. The game ended without much more damage. I think the final was something like 61-0. The Birds could have put up much more. Same thing (albeit to a lesser degree) in '09.

 

I also don't buy that it is a foregone conclusion that Cov. Cath. and Highlands will meet in the playoffs. I'm scanning my memory (always dangerous) and cannot recall a playoff game with the Birds since ... what '07??

Remembering back to '08, as much as I'd like to convince myself that the lack of scoring in the second half was due to defensive adjustments made at half time by the Cov Cath coaching staff, I think you're right...Dale pulled back on the reins a bit.

 

I also have to agree...I'm not yet willing to guarantee that Cov Cath will see Highlands in the playoffs. Johnson Central isn't hasn't ever shown any signs of rolling over against Cov Cath, and I would expect that to be a heckuva game to get through to make it up against Highlands.
