I'm assuming your reasoning behind Mueller considering tapping the breaks would be to not embarrass Cov Cath and thereby not give the Colonels reason to come in with a bigger chip on their shoulder in the playoffs? I can see where maybe, MAYBE that could play a small roll in a playoff matchup, but I think Cov Cath is groomed - particularly under this coaching staff - to always walk into Highlands games with a chip on their shoulder.

 

That being said, I've never known Dale to hold anything back at all against Cov Ca

th. I think he goes for every last point his team is capable of scoring.

 

I think if Highlands gets a 45 pt. or more lead, Dale will put in the reserves. That's what he usually does. The game, at this point, is probably won, and there is no good reason to take a chance of getting the first string injured. Plus, it gives the reserves a chance to get valuable experence since we're going to lose a lot of really good players next year. GO BIRDS!:thumb:

"A" concern could be game conditioning. Starters played entire game against Boyle, a series or 2 in the 2nd half against Dixie and 0 snaps in the 2nd half against Western and Mason Co. Considering the next 3 games (Harrison Co., Pendleton Co. and Holmes), Dale may want the starters to see significant 2nd half action. I suspect Dale would not complain about a 21 - 28 point lead througout the 2nd half. Get the starters some game conditioning.

 

Yes, I know that HHS is a VERY well-conditioned team. That said, wind sprints and carrying "chips" through town in the summer is different from thinking and executing while tired in a game situation.

 

Also, I don't think Dale would attempt to "manipulate" the game to keep it within that comfortable spread. I think he scores as early, often and quickly as the CCH defense will allow. He can always add in a few "fun bunches" at the end of practice the following week.

There is no question CCH and Highlands will play a second time in the playoffs. With that in mind, and assuming Highlands has some flexibility in the outcome of Saturday's game, if you are Dale Mueller do you "run up" every last point you can on the Colonels or do tap the brakes if you get comfortable in the game?

The real question is, why don't Trinity posters have this level of confidence? "tap the brakes"....I LOVE IT!!!

Not real sure why Dale would hold anything back imo. My gut tells me that Dale isnt hiding anything or holding anything back. Really isnt his style. If he can beat the Blueboys by 70 he does, if he beats them by 14 so be it. Wins, wins, and more wins is all that matters imo.

A question might be asked, "why would he try and beat them by 70". Maybe someday Dale will explain, probably not, but maybe. LOL.

Are you talking specifically about the HHS vs CCH games ? I know for a fact that Dixie , Western and Mason Co. saw a lot of Highlands second team .

Dale does what he does best. Prepares his guys for the State Championship.

Both teams will play hard to the end and I doubt either tap any breaks...That's just not how coaching staffs think IMO. They prepare to win b/c there are NO guarantees!

I know this about Dale Mueller. He will spend not one second of this week thinking about what he will do if HHS is ahead by a large margin. If you have read the posts on this thread you have spent way more time considering such issues than Dale ever will.

Another thing Dale IS thinking about this week is what he will do if his team finds itself down by a considerable margin at any point in the game, and it has nothing to do with letting up, holding back, or tapping breaks.
