There is a ton of political pressure being placed on TCU getting a spot, so they are still in play if the number is 12 and Mizzou bolts. WVU is also an option, but they are hanging on to the SEC dream and the Big 12 is about to tell them to hit the road. Nothing would make me happier than seeing that classless fan base end up without a chair when the music stops...

Hard to tell yet. They are split on the decision so far, but my gut is they stay in the fold...

Actually I have to do a 180 on my previous statement. Talked to a very connected source today that said Pitino is 100% against a move to the Big 12 and could very well retire if UL makes the jump...

Then I imagine that he's already window shopping for that golden watch.

There was a meeting today of the presidents and chancellors of the 14 remaining schools in the Big East and the Chancellor of TCU. They authorized commissioner John Marinatto to "aggressively pursue discussions" with certain schools interested in joining the league. (Navy, Temple, UCF, ECU ... ???). Also SMU was mentioned as a possible new member, though no new invitations were made today. Also, Pittsburgh and Syracuse, who want to start ACC play in the 2012-2013 academic year, will be held to the 27 month departure requirement, meaning they will not be able to join the ACC until the 2014-2015 academic year. They are also discussing an increase in the exit fee. Pitt and Cuse must pay $5 million upon exit whenever that happens. The ACC has just pushed theirs to $20 million. Look for the BE to do the same.

 

I read on another board, tweets of some schools walking out of the meeting, but none of those rumors have been validated by any reliable source.

I would go after the following.

 

Air Force & Navy - Both are better than the two that just left.

 

ECU - their football has gotten better thanks to Skip Holtz.

 

CFU - Natrual Rival for USF

 

SMU - Natrual Rival for TCU - Plus June Jones plays up tempo style.

 

Boise State - Big East needs Boise and TCU to keep BCS bid.

I agree with you on that. Its like divorcing your spouse, then forcing them to stay in the house with you for 2.5 years afterwards. Sure it might save a little money, but how acrimonious will things be?

My feeling is that if replacements are found before then, no. Also, as the article points out, the $5 mill exit fee could be negotiated upward to secure an early release.

 

I've got no problem with holding them to the contract they signed. When you hold someone to an agreement they signed, that's not being vindictive. The point of the stipulation is to prevent this sort of thing from happening, as happened when BC, VT, and Miami left. What's the point of having penalty for breaking contract, if you are not going to enforce it? It also gives the BE more time to save itself. The ACC commissioner has stated that he has no problem with it.
