Sunday? All reports were that he was called up Saturday, flew immediately out of PA and straight to Chicago.

CF is one thing. A corner outfielder needs to at least see how balls bounce around when hit down the line or off the wall. The wall juts out down the line, you have to know where that's going to bounce if it hits that part of the wall or if it doesn't. The ball reacts differently off the fence that's out there compared to the wall that is also out there. I'd find it hard to believe that any corner outfielder, in the last 15 years, has started a game without seeing how a ball bounces in the corners and off the fence/wall at least one time before playing a game there.

 

Here's a fact, if they put him out there and he "Alonso'd" a ball in the corner, everyone would be saying Dusty is an idiot for playing him out there before he had seen one ball rattle around in the corner.

All I heard and read for a week was ranting about why bring Alonso up if you aren't going to play him. I said all along that they brought him up to be a late inning left handed bat off ther bench at a time they still appeared to have a chance in the race. So my point is those who were ranting Alonso should be in the lineup every day has mud on their face now. Dusty was right on that one. Sorry if I touched a nerve. We all make mistakes.

 

Now that they aren't in the race is it benefitting him to not play every day? Votto isn't going to make $17M as a Red in 2013 IMO so Alonso should be getting ready for when Votto gets traded which is probably coming sooner than people think. Also why couldn't anyone figure out that Alonso wasn't going to work out in the OF playing 62 games in Louisville? They kept running him out there though so who's fault was that?

If Sappelt played Wrigley's corner that well (left a ball in the ivy for a GR Double) and made a great diving snag on the line, I think GASP would be a piece of cake. Oh, and the ivy on short notice, whether Saturday night or Sunday morning.

Sure. Because it would be a shame if he allowed an extra base and wrecked the Reds season. After all, they are in a life and death struggle with the Pirates for 4th place.

I thought Sappelt should have played. I do not think Dusty is the guy to lead what looks to be a major youth movement in Cincy. He's gone in the offseason.

I am not really a Dusty fan. However this seems to be following the path of the Reds history since I been alive. It seems like anytime the Reds have had a very good season, the manager is then let go a year after it or close to it. Davey Johnson was let go, in favor of Ray Knight and the Reds sucked after that. Jack Mckeon was let go, and the Reds didn't have another winning season again until last year. How much longer did Lou Pinella last after wining the World Series? I can't remember. And Now looks like Dusty will be probably gone to after this year. So the Reds would just be following their normal path if they get rid of Dusty. However in all those other cases those were the wrong moves, and really hurt the franchise. I think getting rid of Dusty might help since it will be such a young team, depending on who they bring in.

I don't think it is a huge deal either way. However, GABP is a pretty simple outfield to play caroms in. If Dusty is still worried about wins and losses then fine, let him sit. By the time an outfielder gets to the big leagues they should be good enough to handle being a little unfamiliarity--it isn't like he was trying to play The Green Monster. If you're waving the white flag and playing the youngster then do it, if not then why call them up? He's back out there today. Let's see what happens the next time Lewis or someone is 5-10 against a pitcher.

No one said he should be the everyday left fielder. Go back and read. You didn't touch a nerve, simply overexaggerated what you perceived. Sure folks wanted to see Alonso in the lineup to see what he could do, no more no less. Next.

 

Are you going to make me research it? Come on spindoc. Surely we went for at least one week, if not longer, with someone complaining every time Alonso was not starting. Even after each day he started and made misplays in the outfield, there were posters and others complaining about him not starting the next day. If it wasn't happening here, I assure you it was happening on local sports talk radio here in Cincinnati.
