Coming into this game here's what the offense had scored the last 11 games: 7,8,4,3,4,5,3,9,7,4,9. They went 5-6 in those games. The offense has not been bad at all lately--their pitching has stunk.

Not exactly the season that I anticipated considering how the last one went. The bullpen has been too sluggish and isn't really a lot different from last year, but this year's team doesn't appear to have half the drive that the one from last year did. Two things are really sticking out to me: Rollen's injury and not having Orlando Cabrera. I believe that Cabrera was much bigger of a loss on the field than many anticipated; he's definitely the best shortstop the team had since Larkin. There could be plenty of other things contributing to their problems, but I strongly believe the few that I mentioned are strong contributors.

Yep and when we get to the end of the season the offense will be much higher statistically than the pitching. One stat the O stinks in is batting with 2 outs and RISP. Probably the most glaring difference from last years team.

ERA for our starters is 26 out of 30 teams this year. Ouch!! Last year it was 13, huge difference as well.

Rolen's injury and decline were very predictable, and there is no doubt it's a contributing factor.

 

Orlando Cabrera? His loss wasn't significant at all.

He had lost the second base job in Cleveland before he was dealt to the Giants. He has a sub-.300 OBP, which isn't getting it done well.

For the offense is fine folks. They were 25-17 at one point scoring 5.35 while allowing 4.40 per game. Since then they're 29-42 scoring 4.24 per while allowing 4.41.

 

What changed?

 

This teams isn't built to win games 3-2. The only pitcher that can remotely be considered an Ace is Cueto. The opening day starter has struggled so bad that he has been sent to AAA a couple times. If they were hitting with runners in scoring position they would be in the race.

Are you saying this team is built to score 5-6 runs per game? Come on, you got one guy you can count on consistently to produce. Maybe tow if you count BP. This team is built on pitching and defense. The pitching has not been good, hence a losing season. pretty simple. Volquez, Cueto, Leake, Arroyo, Wood, and Bailey were being couinted on to have good seasons. So basically the pitching didn't do well earlier in the year and the bats carried them. Then when the bats cooled off, the pitching still couldn't do their part and pick them up some. Pitching has consistently been down this year, so how is the batting a bigger concern when pitching has been down all season long? There are two big stats that make up why the Reds have struggled. It's the team's era and where they rank compared to last year's, and the teams ability to hit with RISP. Both of those were way down from last year. However this team was built to be a team that relied on pitching, and defense it was not put together to be an offensive machine. So a team that is suppose to be built on pitching, but ranks 26 in MLB that seems like a big problem to me.
