Dusty Baker made it sound like the young players are going to get a lot of playing time.

 

Todd Frazier and Dave Sappelt played big roles in the 8-7 win. Frazier’s was obvious: He went 2-for-4 with a homer and a RBI double. Sappelt was 1-for-5 with a run scored in his debut but he played very well defensively in left field.

 

“That’s why they’re here,” Baker said. “They ain’t here to paint. They’re here to play ball. Do what comes natural to them, what they’ve been yearning for their whole career.”

 

Baker put Sappelt in the lineup and the leadoff spot.

 

“Hey, man, that’s what I like to do,” Baker said. “He’s been playing down there everyday. He’s been playing pretty well. He can hit. There were a few things he had to work on. Hopefully, he worked on them down there. The main thing we know is he can hit. Hopefully, he can give us a jolt in that leadoff spot.”

It's just Dusty being Dusty. The guy is an idiot. That is why I laughed out loud when I read the quote yesterday. Dusty hates playing the young guys. He has more than proven that the past 3 or 4 years. He simply has to go. I can't wait to see how VOR defends him today. The Reds are done, yet Dusty is still playing Fred Freaking Lewis over a young guy like Sappelt. Come on Dusty supporters. Defend away. Explain the logic.

I'm really just at a loss. All the young guys (Cozart, Alonso, Frazier, & Sappelt yesterday) have looked solid and capable when they've been given the chance. At this point, with the season over, who cares if they finish .500 and 10 games out or 10 below and 20 games out? Play the youngsters daily and see if they're capable of being counted on next year in meaningful games. Call up Mesoraco, they carried 3 C's for a good portion in the past, why not now?

I'm sure they did it when Votto was out and Hernandez was playing 1B every game. But it's not practical since Hernandez isn't needed to play another position currently. I agree Mesoraco should be brought up, but Hernandez will have to be moved to make room for him.

Defend it, no. Provide the logic for why Dusty is playing Lewis and Hernandez, here you go. Lewis is 7-9 lifetime versus Hammel and Hernandez is something like 8-15. So Dusty is playing the numbers. Personally, I am like you all. I consider the season over so I say put Sappelt out there. But here is a question to consider - do you expect Sappelt to play every day the rest of the year?

I have criticized him where it is warranted and where he makes a move that doesn't make sense. The game a couple weeks back where he brought Cordero in to close on Sunday after he had been roughed up and pitched 3 days in a row, bad move. Dusty deserved to be questioned on that one. But when it comes to questioning the daily lineup like some want to do and act like he lost the title because he didn't play every game in June like it was game 7 of the World Series, that just isn't real. When you have a 25 man roster to play 162 games, the stars are going to get days off, guys who aren't going well get some PT, you have to leave a starter in longer than you want sometimes, you have to bring in a different reliever than you would prefer for some reason fans aren't even aware of ....you can't play every day like it is game 7. What if Dusty went up to Sappelt after the game yesterday, said great first game and Sappelt said thanks, man I am drained and I don't even know where I am staying the night when we fly into Cincy. So Dusty says kid just take tomorrow, get settled, and you won't be starting so don't worry about that. Take it easy and get your feet on the ground.

So basically Votto wants no part of moving to LF and Yonder would be better off back in AAA.

 

 

 

It sounds like the Yonder Alonso experiment in left field is over and the Yonder Alonso experiment at third base is about to begin.

 

Asked if Alonso would play left again, Dusty Baker said: “Not in the near future.”

 

Alonso had a rough time of it in his three starts in the left field on the road trip. He missed played three balls and made an error.

 

Alonso was at Great American Ball Park early taking balls at third base. He may eventually play there, but, again, not in the near future.

 

“You don’t want to do it in the big leagues,” Baker said. “But that’s the position he started at. It’s an mirror image of first base really. You get more plays. Most first baseman are at first base because they’re left-handed or they don’t have the arm to play third.

 

“We’ll see. We’re trying to find the best place to get his bat in the lineup.”

The Reds have not approached Joey Votto about the other way of getting Yonder Alonso in the lineup — moving Votto to left field. He played six games there as a rookie. Does he think could be a good a left fielder?

 

“I think I’m a pretty good first baseman,” Votto said. “And I think one the best attributes as a team is infield defense. We have four very good — and obviously as second and third — great defenders.”

When will Cozart be back?

 

I think he is eligible to come off the DL this week but I don't think he is ready.
