Defend it, no. Provide the logic for why Dusty is playing Lewis and Hernandez, here you go. Lewis is 7-9 lifetime versus Hammel and Hernandez is something like 8-15. So Dusty is playing the numbers. Personally, I am like you all. I consider the season over so I say put Sappelt out there. But here is a question to consider - do you expect Sappelt to play every day the rest of the year?

 

And let's be clear about where I stand on Dusty. I didn't like it when the Reds hired him. I had a lot of questions about him. I have criticized him where it is warranted and where he makes a move that doesn't make sense. The game a couple weeks back where he brought Cordero in to close on Sunday after he had been roughed up and pitched 3 days in a row, bad move. Dusty deserved to be questioned on that one. But when it comes to questioning the daily lineup like some want to do and act like he lost the title because he didn't play every game in June like it was game 7 of the World Series, that just isn't real. When you have a 25 man roster to play 162 games, the stars are going to get days off, guys who aren't going well get some PT, you have to leave a starter in longer than you want sometimes, you have to bring in a different reliever than you would prefer for some reason fans aren't even aware of ....you can't play every day like it is game 7. What if Dusty went up to Sappelt after the game yesterday, said great first game and Sappelt said thanks, man I am drained and I don't even know where I am staying the night when we fly into Cincy. So Dusty says kid just take tomorrow, get settled, and you won't be starting so don't worry about that. Take it easy and get your feet on the ground.

You are definitely correct about the bolded.

They haven't had a game like this for quite a while offensively or pitching wise. As far as the offense they still only had 7 total hits with the 3 HRs and only 4 BBs, 3 by Votto. They also didn't score but 1 run past the 3rd inning. It was like they just didn't want to come back out after the rain delay.

"Fred Lewis is 7-for-9 off (starter Jason Hammel)," Baker said. "Plus, he throws a lot of breaking balls. We want Sappelt to get a day to learn our field. It takes a lot of energy to come in and get settled."

Oh, and by the way, Sappelt did not fly in from Louisville, he flew from Scranton, Pennsylvania Sunday morning and arrived at yesterday's game shortly before game time. He probably has all his stuff in Louisville and I wouldn't doubt that he had to drive down there and back Monday to get things. Plus figuring out where he was going to stay, etc.

With Sappelt's late arrival at GABP he obviously didn't get to take any balls in LF. Since Alonso went with the team to Chicago he was able to take those balls in LF.

CF is one thing. A corner outfielder needs to at least see how balls bounce around when hit down the line or off the wall. The wall juts out down the line, you have to know where that's going to bounce if it hits that part of the wall or if it doesn't. The ball reacts differently off the fence that's out there compared to the wall that is also out there. I'd find it hard to believe that any corner outfielder, in the last 15 years, has started a game without seeing how a ball bounces in the corners and off the fence/wall at least one time before playing a game there.

 

Here's a fact, if they put him out there and he "Alonso'd" a ball in the corner, everyone would be saying Dusty is an idiot for playing him out there before he had seen one ball rattle around in the corner.

If he isn't in the lineup tonight, then you all have a legitimate complaint and I will be right there with you. I am not getting my shorts in a bunch because the kid didn't start last night.
