It sounds like the Yonder Alonso experiment in left field is over and the Yonder Alonso experiment at third base is about to begin.

 

Asked if Alonso would play left again, Dusty Baker said: “Not in the near future.”

 

Alonso had a rough time of it in his three starts in the left field on the road trip. He missed played three balls and made an error.

 

Alonso was at Great American Ball Park early taking balls at third base. He may eventually play there, but, again, not in the near future.

 

“You don’t want to do it in the big leagues,” Baker said. “But that’s the position he started at. It’s an mirror image of first base really. You get more plays. Most first baseman are at first base because they’re left-handed or they don’t have the arm to play third.

 

“We’ll see. We’re trying to find the best place to get his bat in the lineup.”

The Reds have not approached Joey Votto about the other way of getting Yonder Alonso in the lineup — moving Votto to left field. He played six games there as a rookie. Does he think could be a good a left fielder?

 

“I think I’m a pretty good first baseman,” Votto said. “And I think one the best attributes as a team is infield defense. We have four very good — and obviously as second and third — great defenders.”

He won't be for this team very many more years. I wish they had traded him for Bautista and maybe they still will.

Defend it, no. Provide the logic for why Dusty is playing Lewis and Hernandez, here you go. Lewis is 7-9 lifetime versus Hammel and Hernandez is something like 8-15. So Dusty is playing the numbers. Personally, I am like you all. I consider the season over so I say put Sappelt out there. But here is a question to consider - do you expect Sappelt to play every day the rest of the year?

 

And let's be clear about where I stand on Dusty. I didn't like it when the Reds hired him. I had a lot of questions about him. I have criticized him where it is warranted and where he makes a move that doesn't make sense. The game a couple weeks back where he brought Cordero in to close on Sunday after he had been roughed up and pitched 3 days in a row, bad move. Dusty deserved to be questioned on that one. But when it comes to questioning the daily lineup like some want to do and act like he lost the title because he didn't play every game in June like it was game 7 of the World Series, that just isn't real. When you have a 25 man roster to play 162 games, the stars are going to get days off, guys who aren't going well get some PT, you have to leave a starter in longer than you want sometimes, you have to bring in a different reliever than you would prefer for some reason fans aren't even aware of ....you can't play every day like it is game 7. What if Dusty went up to Sappelt after the game yesterday, said great first game and Sappelt said thanks, man I am drained and I don't even know where I am staying the night when we fly into Cincy. So Dusty says kid just take tomorrow, get settled, and you won't be starting so don't worry about that. Take it easy and get your feet on the ground.

Just an awful night for the Red's pitching. The Rocks and the Reds playing HR derby with the Rocks winning that so far 4-3 and the game 9-7. Trouble is that the Reds only have 7 hits and all the Rocks HRs are 2 run Johnsons.

Red's pitching line tonight; 5 pitchers, 194 pitches, 10 runs, 14 hits, 5 BBs and 2 HBP. Real nice night by the starter and his bullpen. Another night like this and the call will be going out to Louisville for reinforcements with no offday this week.

They haven't had a game like this for quite a while offensively or pitching wise. As far as the offense they still only had 7 total hits with the 3 HRs and only 4 BBs, 3 by Votto. They also didn't score but 1 run past the 3rd inning. It was like they just didn't want to come back out after the rain delay.

See LRCW, this is where you're wrong about some of us. When Dusty is wrong, he'll be called out. There is simply no reason, that any of us are aware of, that Sappelt shouldn't have been in the lineup yesterday. Again, I usually give coaches the benefit of the doubt because, like VOR stated, Sappelt may have had a reason that he couldn't play. If he didn't have that reason then it's unacceptable.

 

Here's where I stand.

 

At this point, I'm trying Alonso at 3B when Frazier sits, or bringing up Francisco when healthy. Besides that, Alonso can come off the bench because he is terrible in the OF. As I stated before, Rick Sweet is not going to come out and tell anyone that Alonso can't play the OF. I'm not shocked no one is giving Dusty credit for that evaluation though. If Francisco can't stay healthy for another month and a half, I'm finished with him. Rolen is done, IMO.

 

Cozart comes back and plays every day. Send Janish down and play Renteria on Cozart off days.

 

BP and Joey every day with Cairo and Alonso spelling them.

 

OF: Sappelt, Stubbs, Bruce Let Lewis spell those guys.
