RP, I'm gathering that the reason for this is Curley's injuries. The other games weren't even close, and a clear dominance was established. We are victims of 2 things:

 

1. Losing to X in the early season, while dealing with injuries ourselves

 

&

 

2. Curley's injuries, but without a reciprocal blowout by us over them.

Maybe they were not on top of their game because Russell was the better team. That was obvious.

 

Maybe, but I don't think Maynard fumbled 3 times the whole season, yet he managed to do it in one game. The questionable play call by Haywood on the 7 yard line, he runs PA and Russell intercepts the ball with 50 seconds left and a couple timeouts. IMO, he should have called 1 or 2 run plays before he went to PA. Many things could have went different for Belfry and resulted in a win, but they didn't. Russell was the winner, it was just my opinion that Belfry was the better team.

As one of those who ranked Boyle Co, while leaving off BE, allow me to defend this vote. The BC-BE game was VERY close, and from what I read, the game really could have gone either way. Plus, I'm pretty sure the game was at BE, right? Perhaps on a neutral field, BC would have come out on top.

 

I am not disputing that BE won the game against BC fair and square. However, I would wager that if the two played a 10 game series, BC would come out on top more than 50% of the time. This same reasoning can also be used to defend ranking Saint X above Trinity at this point, even though Trinity beat them in the 4A state finals. In a one-game scenario featuring two solid teams (whether it be BC-BE or X-T), anything can happen!

The pat answer would be to say that Trinity was the better team Friday night, for the only time all year.

 

But my real answer is that if Petrino goes out with a pretty severe injury, instead of Curley, in my opinion we're talking about X's chances for a threepeat. I think that had they BOTH gone down, it's the same scenario. X had the better team, but had a lousy night.

 

You might recall that I DEFENDED the Rocks after they laid their egg at the Pizza Box, and reminded people that Trinity was a good team that just had nothing go their way.

 

I really don't know if St.X even makes it as far as the state game if they had endured the injuries all season long that Trinity had. rember that JH game was very close.
