9th Region 2011

Which Champions are you talking about, the one in Cincinnati only had 15 Schools and 2 major league scouts. And it was not called the Ohio Valley Showcase so try again.

Marley, Champions in Lexington held the Ohio Valley Showcase. No need for anyone to "try again".

Heard the group of football guys who are not allowed to participate in baseball at HHS this year have just become Regional favorites on the tennis courts.

The Ohio Valley Showcase did not publish a cumulative public report that I am aware of for all the pitchers. Champions did send each participant a report individually. The pitchers threw in groups of about 5. The second to last group included Clinton Hollon (was at Lafayette, I believe, but now at Woodford County), Spencer Drake from Eastern, Tyler Arthur from Lexington Catholic, Matt Spalding from St. X, and Logan Shaftner from Lexington Lafayette. There were multiple radar guns there, including the guns that representatives from Champions used as well as about 20 major league scouts that were there. I saw numbers from a gun with Hollon that were 90-93. I saw numbers from Spalding that were 92-95. I had heard that Drake was 90 or above. I heard that Arthur and Shaftner were consistently upper 80’s and may have touched 90.

....in other relevent news related to this thread (9th region 2011), I rearranged my sock drawer last night. Take this to a thread about 90 MPH pitchers and let's get back on topic.

The reason for my post was not to highjack this thread to another topic, but to bring facts and reality into the discussion. I like discussing baseball, but I also like being objective and trying to make sure I have a grasp of the situation. I think that if you feel my posts were the same as "rearranging your sock drawer" you've really missed the point.

Can you elaborate?

Can you elaborate?

The HHS football players have the same Spring Break Rule as the rest of the kids at HHS. Football players actually have more leniency than anyone. They have the opportunity to attend Spring football, if communicated to the coach. You have to follow the rules to play the game..It is a pretty simple concept..

Is the Cottingham kid from BW related to the Cottinghams from Campbell Co.

He is Dusty's son..

I have been waiting!! Why is the greatest question ever asked. The best baseball players in the school are not allowed to play baseball this year if they go on spring break. So the so called baseball gods think they can win with out the upper class man.

This could be a thread in its self. Senior year for kids who cant play baseball and the rest of the distric and region is now given a chance in baseball and NOT because of football.

For years at HHS seniors have always gone a group trip for spring break and there was never any problems. Now this year there is after everyone had already made plans. Thats the problem not that "hey you go on spring break you dont play" just how it was handled and the timeing of. Come on last year they took the kids who didnt go and went to Gatlinburge and played 3 games. You mean to tell me that those three games in the beging of the season means something. Lets think about this how many games do you need to win 6!!! Dist Reg Sec State.

Was asked this morning why am I in this thread anyway! Cause my son wanted to play baseball this yr and is going on a trip with his church group and had to decied church or baseball now is that right???

Also i hate to see any sport at HHS suffer. i am a tiger by birth and moved here so my kids could be part of the great education system and the winning sports programs.

i just want to know who is going to protect those 7-9th graders when they are playing against 18-19 year old men. who is going to take the wrap when a J Whitford takes a fastball off his arm at 90 from a Cov cath pitcher and he never wants to play BBall again? Then were will the program be?

Are you kiddn us??? two different sports. Again get on the line and see what they tell you to say next since you have so many friends in the program! lets face it no one will naswer the question of what happens when one of these KIDS get hurt playing men!!!! Thats why Dale has a Fresh and JV teams so the kids don't play against men.

Clyde you know so much tell us why Dale doesnt play the 7/8 graders in the middle school league. The first reason is he doesnt ever want anyone to think they can beat him. So by playing the 7-10th graders who arent ready to play VR baseball is showing everyone we play look we can beat the birds ion something (because they arent allowed to play there best)

Get a grip Clyde while every other team is NKY is in Fla playing baseball on spring break

OK maybe i dont get it and really dont care to get it! People out side of HHs will never get it. How many kids have stopped playing baseball at hhs because of spring football? Does Jeremy try telling those kids no you cant do both? Nope because he knows he will lose the kids he needs. So now he is loseing even more then the seniors. 7 Jr and Sr tried out. Does anyone really think they can with that?

Good luck and i am out!!!!

But tell us ABC2, how do you really feel about the spring break rule?

Cut Jeremy some slack. The guy has done more for the baseball program since he took over 2 seasons ago than had been done for decades. Sounds like the rule didn't work out for your son, but all rules can have unforeseen consequences, no matter how well intended & how good they are for the long run health of a program - both of which I believe to be the case with this rule. My son has missed out on seeing his aging grandmother for two years now to stay in town for baseball. Life is a series of decisions. You make the best choices you can based on your priorities & then live with the consequences. As Oprah likes to say - "you can have it all, just not at the same time." And that is the last time I'll ever quote Oprah.

Let me get this straight, HHS has a rule that if you abandon your team and go on Spring Break to party that you can't play baseball? Sounds egregious. What next, football players have to practice during the Thanksgiving Holidays?

No problems for the last 30 years of spring break, you need to take a better look.

Who says a kid is going to party? Do you let your kids drink and act crazy? We sure do not. Just because a kid wants to go on spring break with his family or church group does not mean he is drinker or a bad kid!

And again no one is answering the question about how is he going to win! Do not get me wrong I like Jeremy he is a nice guy. But lets face it you need to win and if my kid was an 8th grader or freshman there is no way he would be facing those 18-19 yr old men. So tell me since everyone is ok with the NEW spring break rule when do we win? Are we on a 5 year plan to win a dist or region? If that is the case imo he will not be here to see that. HHS has great athletes how are used to winning and not being on the L side and so are the parents.

I said nothing remotely suggesting that kids who go on spring break are "bad kids." It's a simple decision, play baseball for your school or go on Spring Break and do whatever. If you don't want to play competitive baseball, go on Spring Break, come back and join a recreational team. I am aware that there are schools who treat baseball and some other spring sports as a semi-competitive venture and allow their spring athletes to go on spring break. My daughter runs track and she is going on Spring Break. She elected to be on the school's B team which means they go on Spring Break and do not travel with team for weekend meets. She's doing it for fun and to stay in shape. My son on the other hand plays baseball and will not be joining his Mom, Sis and the rest of Louisville in Destin, Fl. He's been to the beach many times before and knows the beach will be there when the season's over. That's fine for those semi-competitive schools who choose to honor the non-federal holiday of Spring Break. But I assure you that the PRP's, Apollo's and Lex Cath's of the world don't allow their baseball players to take off for Spring Break.

Not even if the trip is sponsored by a fundamentalist Baptist Church with a 100 adult chaperones would Bill Miller at PRP allow a player to miss a week of baseball for Spring Break.

Bottom line, if your team takes off a week for springbreak, they will never be a competitive baseball program.
