Now that the UConn women have reached 89 consecutive victories, do you consider that to be the standard or do you still consider UCLA to hold the mark?

I didn't choose both are impressive, but they are in their own right. But the standard to me is UCLA Men's. At bare minimum, they need to be kept separate. Where it gets annoying is where they refer to UConn's streak as the longest Division 1 streak. Just say it's the longest women's streak and be done with it. They're not comparable. Even at UCLA's peak, there were teams that could legitimately compete. Women's basketball is a total joke. It's still impressive that UConn hasn't been beaten in that long, but they've only had 2 games that were even by single digits.

I marked both, but you left De La Salle's record of 151 straight wins out of the poll. Why a high school football team? Because women's basketball is as different from men's basketball as it is different from high school football. If there is going to be a comparison of completely different sports, then the standard resides in Concord, California.

Here's my argument for UCLA men's streak:

They defeated teams with these kinds of players on them:

1. Notre Dame (4 times) with Adrian Dantley, Shumate

2. Long Beach State (twice) with Ed Ratleff.

3. Providence with Marvin Barnes and Eddie Digreggorio

4. Memphis State with Larry Kennon and Larry Finch

5. NC State with David Thompson (NC State would upset them later in the NCAA tourney)

6. Maryland with Len Elmore, John Lucas and Tom McMillan

I would also add that the '72 team won by an AVERAGE margin of 33 points per game. Add to that the fact that backup center Swen Nater was an NBA draft pick (ala Orton) for just playing behind Walton.

Bruins played some very, very talented teams that defeated many quality squads except them. Factor in winning 7 straight NCAA titles in that mix and you have a feat that is not equal in any level of college Basketball IMO.

I completely agree with what you are saying and I have been making the same argument. If a minor leaguer gets a 57 game hitting streak you don't push aside Joe D. They are both very impressive but they are different!

I really haven't understood the "controversy" over the U Conn women's streak. It is a great streak and has nothing to do with the UCLA streak except they both play a similar sport. This will pass in the next week and not be discussed again. If a men's team ever has a long winning streak again, they will not even mention catching the U Conn women's streak where ever it ends up. The talk will be all about catching UCLA. Just like as Coach K passes Dean and moves toward Bobby Knight, is anyone going to talk about Pat Summitt? Shoot, they aren't even going to talk about the two lower level men's coaches that have more wins the Bobby Knight.

If UConn wants to be referred to as the holder of the "longest consecutive win streak in history," then they are being greedy.

Each respective sport has its own set of records.

UCLA holds the Men's Basketball record for consecutive wins, UConn Lady Huskies hold the Womens record. Period.

If UConn really wants to overshadow what UCLA Men's team did under wooden, then they are engaged in a lame and unnecessary attempt to make themselves look good.

What UConn's women have accomplished is something to be very proud of, and it will stand on its own. They don't need to justify it by dragging in a Men's record.

Just my two cents.

Both are impressive. 89 games in a row. Think about it, they could have lost at any point. One bad night, one buzzsaw, an injury- any of these things could have happened to derail them, but they have kept winning. And it's not like they have feasted on chumps. They have taken on all comers. Impressive.

Saw a stat where in UConn's streak they had played 10 more top ranked teams than UCLA did.

Not exactly sure but think that the PAC in the UCLA domination time was not nearly the league that it is today. UConn plays in a tougher league than UCLA did.

The Wayland Baptist University women's basketball team achieved a winning streak of 131 games which started November 7, 1953 and ended March 20, 1958 (ended by Nashville Business School 46-42). However, since women's basketball was not sponsored by the NCAA at that time Wayland Baptist played in an Amateur Athletic Union.

Point being, all these win streaks are impressive and we can find differences and sticking points with all these streaks. I vote they are both impressive.

Who knows where UConn's ends, btw. They can maybe take down the 131 posted by Wayland Baptist.

Hard to tell. USC was pretty good in those days but there were only 8 teams in the league. Might also factor in that non-conference winners were not invited to the NCAA. There were "at large" teams but if you were in a conference you had to win it or go to the NIT.

Both are impressive but Women's basketball is as different from Men's basketball as baseball is to softball. Different ball, different shot clocks. UCLA should be the standard but I voted both are impressive because they both are.

I read a quote from John Wooden once many moons ago:

"If you want to watch how basketball is supposed to be played, watch a women's basketball game."

I believe that both are impressive and voted that way. With doing that, I believe that the men's streak won't ever be broken, but what UConn has done with their women's team definitely makes a statement. What UConn has done at the women's level has not been easy with the talent of other teams and their coaches.
