I think NCC did play to their potential against Beechwood. The difference in the two games is on Beechwood - not NCC or Mayfield. Beechwood played a great game against NCC. They made their big plays and didn't turn the ball over. Against Mayfield, Beechwood just did not make plays. They fumbled on the 20 on their first drive. They were marching right through Mayfield on that first drive just like they did against NCC. Both games ended up much the same as NCC and Mayfield both played smash mouth and Beechwood could not stop them late. The two are actually very similar teams in many ways. Both teams have excellent lines. Both teams have multiple skill players that make it hard to key on one person and stop them. All we heard about was the speed of Owensboro Catholic and we saw how that played out so NCC clearly can handle speed. I think NCC vs. Mayfield is one of those games we can debate from now on. And if they played each other, we would still debate it because it would be a close game one way or the other. The losing team would say if we hadn't dropped that pass or if we hadn't fumbled on the goal line. It is a pick 'em game and the only way we could ever truly tell how the matchups would play out would be if they played each other. That isn't going to happen. I say give both teams credit for clearly being the champs in their respective classes and leave at that.

Mayfield wins this one and is likely the best team in the lower three classes.

I think that it's funny that people are arguing that NCC is one-dimensional. They are much faster than many know and not hypothetically, I will say that NCC didn't play anywhere near their full potential against Beechwood. Everyone talked about how tough the OC passing game was and that got nowhere, which I believe is indicative of their "weak pass defense".

 

They have a couple of kids with decent speed, but, as a whole, they aren't a fast team at all. Actually there line is very slow. Sorry if that bothers you. People get on here and throw these hypotheticals out here so they can beat there chest about there team, but, I've seen both NCC and Mayfield and either could win a heads up match, because there isn't a huge difference in the 2 teams, but, if your just looking for someone to beat the NKy drum, sorry, can't do it. My eyes aren't as great as they once were, but, I can certainly still see with them and I'd love Mayfield chances 3 out of 4 imo.. Better defense, better offense, better special teams, more speed, comparable size and depth.

They probably would have. Only team in KY that they couldn't handle on their schedule was Ryle and many of their fans felt it was their best team in a while if not ever. Only a few other teams in the state that I think would've been strong favorites or even favorites against SK they had a great team this year, Ryle just had a better one.

 

As for the game being discussed, I'd say NCC but Mayfields has been very impressive the past two weeks.

New Cath would win by 2 or 3 TD's...

I watched both teams yesterday. I don't live in either area. I didn't go to either school. NewCath by at least 14. Too many big, fast MEN playing for the NCC team.

Let me set the record straight for a few Mayfield fans...I am NOT a Newcath fan or alum. Anyone that knows me personally knows that I follow Holmes the closest with Highlands being a close second in football.

 

I think it's funny that people down state said Newcath was too slow to hang with Owensboro Catholic and that their pass game would tear the NCC secondary apart...how'd that game turn out again?

 

Newcath indeed has some big boys in the trenches and overall, a lot of size. To call them slow, however, is simply being very biased toward your team and thinking they'd win. Kelly would run all over the Mayfield defense. He has done it against EVERYONE he has went up against, including Ryle who is much better than Mayfield, so why wouldn't it happen against Mayfield?

 

You say they don't have a passing qb. Hightchew doesn't have to pass for Newcath to win because in the trenches they're big and strong enough to just plow over teams. When he does pass, he is very efficient because the Newcath rushing attack keeps a defense honest. I also think Hightchew's ability to run for big gains on broken pass plays would be a difference maker. He's been a playmaker all year.

 

You say Mayfield would pass at will and their speed and athleticim outside would be too much for Newcath's "slow' defense. Hate to break it to ya but 6'7 Jake Geisler and Logan Martin would be in the Mayfield backfield all night, leaving Guhy no time to pass. His best option would be slants and quick outs.

 

I realize you Mayfield fans haven't experienced a state championship in some time, so you're extremely excited and rightfully so, but you're seriously underestimating Newcath if you think that just because Beechwood beat them, they wouldn't be good enough to beat the Cards.

 

I'm not trying to beat the nky drum at all or chest thump....just wish some of you would give the Breds a little more credit because this group is extremely goodand definetly on par with Mayfield, if not better.

Everyone knows that this matchup won't happen this year . Please, You had a lucky long pass to get there, the whole first drive lasted what 3-4 plays. Beechwood and Mayfield could play 10 times and you would not like the results. Bw had a nice team but not a Mayfield. Okay I hijacked, oh well I dont care, I'm the champ :banana:

Since a lower class team (1A Beechwood) beat a higher class state champion (2A NCC), I declare them the Hypothetical state champion of NKY in 2A. Hypothetically speaking, of course.

Threads like this say alot about what getting smaked around by Mayfield did to the Bw fans and possibly to the program. You guys are in total melt down mode and are clearly worried that Mayfield is the 1A pit boss now. Stop and read all the posts and one gets the picture of a fan group that is in full panic
