The person who started this thread, myself, is neither a Beechwood or Newcath fan so this post is pure speculation on your part. Regardless, Beechwood is still king of 1A football with 11 titles. Maybe had Mayfield not gotten beat several times in the second and third rounds while Beechwood was making state semi and state final appearances, these two would've met more. :thumb:

 

What does Beechwood have to do with the thread title though? This is about who would win if 2A STATE CHAMP Newcath and 1A STATE CHAMP Mayfield met today.

Mayfield had their year, congrats! But if you think the BW fans are in meldown you're way off. When Mayfield catches BW in titles then that will be something to boast about. I bet it never happens.

I just think Newcath is getting slighted big time here for their loss to Beechwood.

 

They are much better than that game showed. Their dominance of the 2A state playoffs is the biggest indication of this.

This Mayfield fan would never look past NCC. Graves County always plays us tough in our cross town match up every year no matter how good or bad they are so I understand the rivalry game between NCC and Beechwood.

I agree with you TP. I am amazed at how a few Beechwood fans have totally forgotten Beechwood was back to back state champs just two years ago. I don't want to take the moaning of 2 or 3 people on BGP to indicate the program is in melt down because it definitely is not. But there are a couple fans that apparently panic any time Beechwood doesn't win a state championship. Last year's team had issues and I guess that is what put these few fans in a frenzy. This year's team was young with only 3-4 seniors getting playing time but had a very good season. Getting beat by one of Mayfield's best teams ever is nothing to get alarmed about. Anyone who watched that game knows how good Mayfield was this year. Beechwood was in that ball game till the 4th quarter and I think you would agree Beechwood was one of the best teams you saw this year. I think Beechwood was #2 in 1A behind Mayfield. Yes I want a state title every year too but being the second best team in 1A is a great statement about a team. And if Beechwood works hard next year and makes their pre season favorite billing stand up like the last 3 state champs in 1A, then that will be 3 state championships in 5 years. I think I can live with that.

 

As I said earlier, I have seen both teams and I think it is a pick 'em game between Mayfield and NCC. The only way to get a true feel would be to see how the matchups play out on the field. How many picks would NCC get against Guhy? He dosen't throw interceptions but NCC's defensive backs are very good at picking passes off. Only way to know is if they play. How would the lines match up? Both teams have very good lines and the only way to know who would win is if they play on the field. Bottom line - both teams are excellent state champions and we will never know who would win in a matchup.

Very good point, and NCC would never look past Mayfield. Both programs are too good for either of them to do that.

Regardless of what anyone thinks about who's better, would win, etc., I, as well as many others would have loved to see the game happen. Mayfield was great all season and NCC completely changed since the Beechwood loss and both title games were dominantly won by both. I beleive that the game would have been very interesting to say in the least.

I would say Beechwood showed NCC they better come out of the gate every game at their highest level of intensity. And I think Beechwood showed NCC that they are a running team first. They tried a little too much finesse and passing against Beechwood in the first half and Beechwood shut it down. That is why that game is such a good end of the season game for both teams. It truly tells you what you need to do to win a state title. Beechwood showed NCC what they needed to do. NCC showed Beechwood what they needed to do. Let me set the record straight for a few Mayfield fans...I am NOT a Newcath fan or alum. Anyone that knows me personally knows that I follow Holmes the closest with Highlands being a close second in football.

 

I think it's funny that people down state said Newcath was too slow to hang with Owensboro Catholic and that their pass game would tear the NCC secondary apart...how'd that game turn out again?

 

Newcath indeed has some big boys in the trenches and overall, a lot of size. To call them slow, however, is simply being very biased toward your team and thinking they'd win. Kelly would run all over the Mayfield defense. He has done it against EVERYONE he has went up against, including Ryle who is much better than Mayfield, so why wouldn't it happen against Mayfield?

 

You say they don't have a passing qb. Hightchew doesn't have to pass for Newcath to win because in the trenches they're big and strong enough to just plow over teams. When he does pass, he is very efficient because the Newcath rushing attack keeps a defense honest. I also think Hightchew's ability to run for big gains on broken pass plays would be a difference maker. He's been a playmaker all year.

 

You say Mayfield would pass at will and their speed and athleticim outside would be too much for Newcath's "slow' defense. Hate to break it to ya but 6'7 Jake Geisler and Logan Martin would be in the Mayfield backfield all night, leaving Guhy no time to pass. His best option would be slants and quick outs.

 

I realize you Mayfield fans haven't experienced a state championship in some time, so you're extremely excited and rightfully so, but you're seriously underestimating Newcath if you think that just because Beechwood beat them, they wouldn't be good enough to beat the Cards.

We can agree to disagree. Mayfield would hammer NCC much like they did Beechwood. And its okay if those 2 big ole boys are in the backfield all day because thats not where the balls gonna be. Guhy would dink and dunk and when they pressed up tight, beat em to death with the long ball. Noone has even remotely gave Guhy any pressure. I could count his total sacks on 1 hand and those 2 slow big boys wouldnt either..
