If we don't have Kanter on the inside we are at best top twenty - five! I love my Cats but just don't see them beating Louisville, Florida, and UNC without him at post! However, we are good now but foul trouble will take us out of the game because of our depth!

Bledsoe was a BCG recruit originally I believe. The issue with Bledsoe would have been Sandy Bell and the NCAA. Although IMO Sandy did the job right.

 

Absolutely nothing risky about Kanter unless you play him. Cal didn't.

 

From what I've heard, all of the other kids he has recruited are good academic students.

 

The "Cal is going to get us on probation" routine is getting old. He has done nothing here to warrent it.

 

As far as U Mass, my understanding is that he self reported Camby. The right thing to do.

 

The Memphis situation was the NCAA's fault. They cleared the kid to play, and Cal played him. It's garbage what happened to Memphis. Funny how the same thing didn't happen to Kansas the year before.

 

As far as I remember, Calipari was not the one who reported the Camby violations.

I just don't understand this stance. Kanter is by all accounts the best big man in the world for his age, and there weren't any post players in the class that were available that even compared to his skill set. The worst thing that could happen did, and now UK is right where they would have been if they hadn't recruited him. There was ZERO risk factor involved other than him being declared ineligible before he stepped on the court.

 

The allegation that Kanter was paid 100K did not come from an anonymous source on a blog post or an ex-girlfriend but rather from the general manager of Fenerbahce Ulker. The NCAA bases its opinion (flawed though it may be) upon the evidence presented. If additional evidence comes to light after the NCAA issues a decision, they would not be banned by res judicata or double jepoardy principles from acting upon the new evidence. I agree with the earlier poster who suggested the NCAA is not going to give UK or Coach Cal a break. If we give the NCAA the chance to stomp on our throats they will.

 

Long after the 09-10 season was over, the NCAA was still investigating the Bledsoe issue. They are itching to jam us up. If the recently concluded Bledsoe investigation had disclosed Parker High School fudged his grades, Kentucky would have faced NCAA discipline.

 

Given what happened at U Mass and Memphis, I think it is reasonable to be extra careful. Recruiting Kanter (with the paper trail of money payments disclosed to date and goodness knows what else that could come to light) is not careful.

 

I hope the CATS win every game this season in route to their 8th NCAA title. I would just hate to see UK receive NCAA sanctions.

I think your post has some merit, but I also think you're overreacting. Calipari & Kentucky took a chance on Kanter. They did everything by the book & fully disclosed everything. Sure, they wanted Kanter to play, but there are no allegations of fraud or anything of that nature. Simply put, they took a chance and apparently lost. The chance will not have any adverse consequences on the school or Calipari because 1.) they complied with everything; and 2.) they did not play Kanter.

 

If Calipari would've said "Screw you, NCAA. We're going to play Kanter with or without your approval", then you'd be dead on. But he did not.

I agree that in light of the NCAA's ruling on Kanter, the risk will be avoided. That is why I am glad they ruled him ineligible.

Hate it that Kanter won't get to play this season. Rules are rules though.

Laugh all you want to but it's pretty much the truth. I remember when they made them take their blue colored telephones out of Wildcat Lodge back in the early '80s because they said making the phones a different color than the college dorm phones gave them a recruiting advantage. Unreal!!

 

And I remember when Dr. Otis Singletary was President of UK, and then the NCAA.

Some of you guys kill me with this whole "everyone is out to get UK" ploy.

Lexington Herald reporting that Sandy Bell (UK compliance director) says that Enes himself will participate in the appeal. Says UK is wanting "to put a face" on the process. Bell herself says, "I feel comfortable going in with him. He's a good kid." The appeal will take place via teleconference, which will expedite a ruling.

 

I'm still not sure about the NCAA's beef. Was it the $33,000 itself? Or was it that the $33,000 was paid by the Turkish club directly to the Kanters?
