There is no doubt Beechwood is much better this year than last. But if they keep winning in the playoffs they will have to face a loaded Mayfield team in the semis or possibly a Louisville Holy Cross team that is dominating teams so it will be a tough battle for them to get to Bowling Green.

Random thoughts:

 

Ryle needs to scrap the Wildcat.

 

Lonkard's catch was one of the best you'll see.

 

Towles is a great athlete. First time I got to watch him this year. He simply looks the part of a D1 qb. Good arm. Decisions will get better with experience.

 

Deion Mullins is one of the best backs in NKY.

 

HHS looked very limited offensively.

 

HHS receivers dropped too many key passes.

 

Why did Ryle get away from having Hempel under center after they completely dominated HHS on the first drive with that formula?

 

Elliott delivers more blows than any back I've seen in a while.

 

This just in: you can't run wide on Highlands.

 

Lastly, Hempel showed some toughness running that I'd like to see Towles employ.

 

You're right Hemple is averaging one more yard a carry than Towles this season.

Tonight Towles ran for 148 yards.

Tonight Hemple ran for 128 yards.

I certainly see your point.

Two different types of running styles.

A bit disappointed, a bit relieved, a bit concerned and a lot proud!

 

First, congratulations to the Raiders. They beat the Birds in every phase of the game except possibly special teams. They controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides, they had a great game plan, they played smart, disciplined football and they and their fans had great enthusiasm. A winning formula and one that can take them well into the playoffs if they maintain it. Good luck!

 

Birds-thank you for a great run! It's been a lot of fun but now the second season starts. Remember how you're feeling tonight and use that as motivation for the rest of the year. Let's go get number 20!

Sure I'm disappointed about the loss , but I'm more disappointed in some of the Bluebird faithful posting in the up-date thread. Late in the game , when things were not looking good , SOME SHOWED THEIR TRUE COLORS ! (I'm done !)

Having not read all the threads I will simply say that the opening kickoff must have led to a moment of overconfidence and the best kicker in NKY, Adam Weinel, was overlooked in favor of the 2-point pot-of-gold at the end of the rainbow. Congratulations to Ryle players and staff who never stop believing. The Raiders have learned well from the home/away exchange with HHS, which was always Ryle's objective. Hopefully HHS has learned something too and some of their players' hurt feelings will be wiped away by another state championship.

Interesting. I went back through all your posts in this thread and can't find the one where you congratulated Ryle on a well-played game and for being the better team tonight. Lots and lots of excuses and reminders about injuries and what could have/should have been and that Ryle's win essentially deserves an asterisk. I guess in response to the above bolded remark I could say that the Bluebirds failed to beat a terribly banged up Ryle team. But I won't.

 

It was a great game between two very good football teams. If they played tomorrow night, maybe Highlands would win. But tonight Ryle was better. Give them credit.

Highlands beat Ryle by 2 td's at Highlands...again, why would Ryle take over #1?

 

Both teams are on the same level as far as I see it.

 

I would put them at a tie for #1 but the team that normally wins the last game in this situation gets the nod from voters.

The Birds were chasing points all night after blowing the opening conversion after TD.

 

Time of possession was key for Ryle and they made some big plays when they had to. It was a very well coached game by Bryson Warner, he certainly didnt blow this one.

 

Hempel was player of the game and Elliot showed me a ton in the 1st half.

 

Towles was big for the Birds in the 2nd half getting them back in the game. Schultz with the big grab for a TD in Gold's absence was outstanding as well.

 

Congrats to both teams.

I saw in the paper the time of possession was about 20 minutes in favor of Ryle. From early in the 2nd quarter to midway through the 3rd quarter I don't think the Birds Offense even saw the field. The game was a blueprint for beating the Birds, grind out possessions and the clock.

 

Kudos to Hempel. Great game by that young man. Towles is the real deal, showing leadership on those last 2 drives. Good luck to both teams in the playoffs!

IMHO, there will be 2 NKy teams playing for state championships, Highlands in 5A, and NCC in 2A. Ryle will be right there but Trinity looks really talented this year.

Now we know how the Bombers must have felt when they lost to the Birds. It's a terrible hangover.

Not here, looking out my office window and surprise surprise!. The sun is coming up! Who would have thought it? I'll have a little caffeine and start making my plans for tomorrow night's Freshman championship and next Friday's home playoff game. Go Birds!

Huge win for the Raiders. Outstanding job by the Ryle coaching staff. Players on both teams played their hearts out. Highlands players and coaches showed a lot of class. This is what High School football should be. :thumb:
