Hempel is a senior I believe. Been starting since he was a sophomore for the orange and black raiders.

Would love to see both a "drive chart" and a total # of plays by each team. I got the time of possession data, but that can sometimes be misleading (although not in this instance). Ultimately, most games come down to how many drives can a DEF stop (downs, turnovers, punt, etc.) and how many drives an OFF can turn into points. In this game, Ryle scored on 4 possessions and HHS scored on 3 (w/ the opening KO return as well).

 

Would have been interesting to see HHS get some additional yards at the end of the 1st half (rather than take a deep sack and run out the clock) to give Weinel a shot at a long FG w/ the wind. 3 points might have come in handy.

How does Ryle match up speed wise with the Rocks?

 

Not too well. You can't really get a read on this game as a comparison for playing the Rocks b/c of the difference in offensive philosophy b/n Highlands and Trinity. Trinity played St. X, and as has been mentioned they have similar philosophies. They have a different style. They are still a Boone Co. team that would prefer to run the ball 80% of the time, and it will be off tackle and quick hitting runs. They will run out of about 4 different formations.

 

Earlier in the year, NewCath sold out in the middle of their defense and held Elliot in check there. However, he can get to the corner this year. He is one that will match up speed wise. Their bread and butter pass play is a quick pass to the slot out of the shotgun. They also like the naked bootleg and let Hempel get outside to pass it. If it is 4th and 2, they will almost automatically go for it. They have that much faith in Elliot.

Ryle has to many players going both ways to match up with Trinity.

How does Ryle match up speed wise with the Rocks?

 

Rocks have more speed than Ryle (Rocks have more speed than pretty much everybody), but Ryle executed very well. If both teams keep winning i think (though i'm not sure) that T would travel to Ryle in the state semi-finals. I would imagine that T & Ryle will be #s 1 & 2 in the next LIT rankings.

I am not sure anyone can match up to Mr. Quick but it is about game-planning and utilizing what you have well. One game at a time though...

Ryle played last night like a team that had just had enough of getting their butts handed to them by Highlands year end and year out. Sometimes things fall into place and you pull out a winner, but don't look for this team to compete against Trinity w/o following the same "run the clock out" mentality. It took them several straight losses to Highlands to figure out that you cannot run with the Birds.

My opinion is that Highlands is undersized. I'm not sure what their scheme is, so I can't say if they are 2 gap or 1 gap on the line. What I can say is that they seemed to be slanting a lot and overpusuing from the LB position. Ryle did a good job of using that to their detriment by putting athletic bodies on them and driving them where they wanted to go. As a result, Ryle had a very tough time getting outside, but did a lot of damage as lanes opened up from tackle to tackle.

That stinks. Was looking forward to watching him next at The Cage. Hopefully they have a kid in the pipeline just as good. I don't want to see Ryle fall to a 4 win program.

That's not entirely true. If you continually get beat up and continue to play the team that does the beating, 1 of 3 things can happen.

 

1. You can continue to get beat up

2. You can get better and start doing the beating

3. You can take your ball and go home and stop the beatings completely

 

Option 3 is exactly what Coach Mueller and the BlueBirds have chosen to do with Colerain. And that's ok, who can blame them? They aren't going to beat the Cardinals regardless of where the game is played and they need to focus on staying healthy and making their run at state championships.

Saw this one from a mile away. The Birds are slow to the perimeter all night. It cost them.

 

Hello?? Did you watch the game? I think if you check the stats Ryle had negative yardage on offensive plays "to the perimeter". On the Highlands O vs. Ryle D, it was a more even match but Highlands best running plays were "to the perimeter". There is no doubt that Highlands had more speed on the field than Ryle. No one I have seen this year can beat Seidl to the corner. He can fly. Ryle gained their yards on power football - quick dives, traps, misdirection plays in the middle or just plain old smash mouth everyone through the 4 hole type ball.

Why do you think Highlands was so amped up for the X game? They were tired of losing to GCL teams and put an end to it. Now, could they pull off that performance every week? Probably not.
