I think if the player has a shot at breaking a state record or is on track to break a record by half-time, why not let the kid do it if he can? If I was a coach I would have left him in there until he broke it. I'll guarantee if the coach would have pulled him and kept him from breaking the record there would have been just as many comments about the coach pulling him as allowing him to stay in the game. It's a "catch 22"

I see your point, but as big a school as WC is, I couldn't imagine JC to outclass them that much. If it were a 6A team playing a 1A team then I could understand the mismatch. Still, congrats to the young man.

When I see the final score was 68-35, it makes me wonder a little if it was classless by the coaches. That is only a 35 point spread. I think someone posted in this thread or the game thread that JC was up by 40 or so at one point. Did it ever get to a running clock? That is a bench mark for me in situations like this. If the game got to a running clock and you are still pounding it with the kid, that is classless. I would guess JC had backups in on defense and that is how Woodford got to 35 points. If the Woodford coaches kept their ones in against the JC two's and was pushing it to score, I can't fault JC for leaving their running back in to try and run out the clock on the game. As several other posters have pointed out, this record could likely have been set by several players this year alone if their coaches decided to keep the ones on the field in pursuit of it. If the final score was 68-0 or 68-7, it would clearly be classless but at 68-35, I need more game details before saying it was classless by the coaches. I also wonder ... who knows these state records? How did the coaches find out what the record was? Did someone research this and then was there a plan in place before the game to go for the record? There are many angles and questions to be looked into. I would like someone to provide all the details on the game and how the coaches knew what the record was before I immediately throw them under the bus.

 

Regardless to all that, congratulations to JJ Jude on running your guts out (literally, apparently) and setting a new record. No one can deny your effort was incredible and deserves to be recognized.

Ok, now I agree on the bad judgement by the head coach after reading the entire thread! My bad for not reading the entire thing; all I saw was the number of yards and thought "Holy Cow". Can't blame the player but the coach did make a bad call by doing what he did.

I don't have an opinion either way but for the people that do have a problems with this. Did you have a problem when Redman was left in games to throw 7 TDs in a half (he did this more than once). Boone Co leaving Alexander in games to rack up yards and TDs. Robinson throwing for over 90 TD passes in a season. Sometimes a special night just happens and you get a shot at something special. Sometimes teams work hard to run those numbers up.

 

As far as WC passing goes. I might be wrong but I believe they are a Air Raid/Tony Franklin System school. If they are then throwing the ball is what they do.

For me anything goes in the first half. If your QB throws 10 TDs and your up 80 I say you keep your foot to the pedal until half. I actually don't have much of problem playing your game for 3 quarters but understand a coach pulling starters after half.

JC subbed every player they had on defense and special teams (every kid that could walk and had on a uniform played). WC left their starters in on offense and defence, scoring at will in the second half. It took a perfect storm to break the record. One coach willing to do it, the other willing to let it happen. It would have been impossible to break the record on a running clock and that is what you would have had if WC would have quit on-side kicking and throwing bombs all over the field against freshmen. WC's coach acted like he was in the game until late in the fourth. Congrats to JJ and the entire team (let's not foget there was a team record broken also). I'm glad it's over and nobody got hurt, on to the Montgomery game for a chance for the district championship.

My thought is that at the point that where setting record becomes more important than giving a full effort and playing the game, then the integrity of the record is lost.

Is there any truth to this and, if so, this may be another reason the coach was so intent on getting the record for the player.

Very poor taste by the coach. IMO not only did you show that you are heartless, but you also showed that this one player is above the team by trying to get him the record. I have no clue the abilities of this young man (sound pretty darn good), but it wasn't done alone. I can remember plenty of times in high school were we pulled players after half time to show some class. To be a grown adult and get pleasure in beating down young men, who have worked hard all season, just to have your name in the record books is as low as it gets. What ever happened to a team victory, in which your JV gets some action?

I realize the stripes are normally "neutral observers," but there are times when they have to enforce the sportsmanship of the game as well.

 

If it was me in the white hat, I would have gone to Matney long before that last play and mentioned, "That kid sure has played a lot tonight. I think most of your guys are getting tired. I wouldn't be surprised if they committed some penalties due to being worn out if they stay in much longer" and then looked him straight in the eye so he knew what I meant.

First of all congrats to JJ Jude. To run for half a grand in one game is a huge accomplishment regardless of any coaching decisions.

 

As far as the coaching decisions, I think each game is different and there isn’t a hard fast rule as to when to substitute. However, I tend to agree with VoR that as a general rule once you have a running clock it is time to throttle back as far as substituting out some or most of the starters. There are several reasons to substitute out players when your team has the game well in hand. It is partly to not try and humiliate the other team, but just as importantly it is to protect your starters from getting injured and give young players real game experience. Football is a team sport and allowing a key player to continue to play for stats alone risks injury which could affect the whole team in future games and possibly the rest of the season as far as playoffs are concerned. Basically I think what is good for the team outweighs what might be good for an individual player.

 

I do not agree that the losing team should be the first to substitute simply because I think it sends the wrong message to your team. If I were a coach one of my steadfast rules would be to never quit. You don’t quit until the whistle is blown and you don’t give up until the clock reads zero.

Congrats to the player. As for the JC coaches, they are totally classless. GameofLife, there is nothing about this that is special. My Mayfield Cardinals played Fulton County the other night and scored on their first six offensive plays and on 7 of their first 9. Mayfield could have shattered this record easily had they wanted too. This is just one example, there are many other teams that have all had the chance to do so as well but they all took the high road. I deplore this lack of sportsmanship. There is nothing classey about this.

This coming from a guy who's team put up 70 points on teams the past two years. 70-0 on Caverna in 09 and 75-6 this season against Fulton County. You think putting 75 points up on a team and having a 69 & 70 point difference is taking the high road? How dare you come on here and say the JC coaches are classless. I'll tell what buddy people that live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. The final score was 68-36 and that's heck of alot closer than some of the scores that your Mayfield Cardinals have been putting up by you taking the high road. You even commenting on this game and calling out other coaches who you don't even know is in itself classless and reaks with hypocrisy seeing your past track record.
