J.J. is not only the the best RB I've watched since Michael West (I watched the Boyle game) but he is, from all accounts of those that know him much better than I do, an incredible young man. Please feel free to criticize the coach for his choice, but leave that to another thread. If you set the state record in anything would you want to read the comments on here about how 20 or 30 other people could have done it. I think not! I think that people on here either forget that the high school athletes can and do sometimes read these boards and you just did your very best to degrade one of the athletic high points of his life or they post rude comments because they are just rude. I'm not in any way defending the coaches choice to allow this, but it happened and the athlete did EXACTLY what his coach and his team asked of him.

 

With that being said I would also like to say that as good a football player as JJ is he is actually a better wrestler and will most likely get his choice of colleges offering a wrestling scholarship. And even though I sometimes forget it myself he is still a junior and still has not fully developed into his full potential. He may break many more records over the rest of this season and next.

No argument there. JJ did what his coaches asked him to do. I am more proud of the fact that he played role and gave 100 percent. Coaching is very hard and in the heat of battle it is harder than people think to make decisions. I will not judge them just a little disappointed that athletics nowadays seem to be more about individual achievements than about team achievements.

Speaking only for myself, i don't blame the kid AT ALL. What's he going to do? Tell the coach to take him out of the game? The fault lies with the coaching (or lack of it). I hope the young man wins a gold medal in wrestling at the Olympic Games! But this record has a funny smell associated with it. The young man may know it now or he may figure it out later, though he is in no way at fault for obeying his "coach".

Agreed I have heard nothing but good things about JJ, congrats to him and his team mates they can always be proud of doing thier job.

Who owned the original record of 574 yards? With that said, I will assume those yards were not gained in a tight game either.

Shawnee finished the season with a record of 0-10. Woodford County is on pace to finish with a similar record, 1-7 through 8 games. Incidently, the 33 points scored by Shawnee was their highest total of the season. Their previous high was 30 points against Atherton in the first game of the season.

Moore's Monquantae Gibson didn't just break a state rushing record with 574 yards against Shawnee last week, he also broke free from the pack in the race for Mr. Football. At least that's the opinion of Moore Coach Jay Fulmer, whose very intention was to raise Gibson's statewide profile by letting him run for a third of a mile and eight touchdowns against the Golden Eagles. In fact, Fulmer had planned for Gibson to break the record the week before against Western, but Moore got such a big lead that the continuous-clock rule clicked in and there wasn't enough time.

 

As for those who think Gibson's performance was diminished because it came against winless Shawnee, Fulmer begged to differ. "You had to see it to believe it," he said. "When Jeremy Britt set the old record (486 yards), he had 57 carries. Monquantae got 574 yards on 25 carries. What he did was impossible, ungodly, beyond high school football. Shawnee was terrible, that's true. But Monquantae was just amazing."

 

Gibson, a 6-foot-1, 195-pounder with 4.5 speed, has a scholarship offer from Kentucky, and most of the other Southeastern Conference schools are interested in him. He's the ninth-leading rusher in state history (6,290 yards), and third all-time in touchdowns (101). But Fulmer thinks Gibson hasn't gotten the recognition he deserves for turning around a program that won a total of six games in the seven years before his sophomore season.

 

"If he played for St. Xavier, Trinity or Male, he'd be the most sought-after talent in the nation," Fulmer said. "He doesn't just do it on offense, either. He plays free safety. He's real physical on defense, but has so much finesse on offense."

 

Gibson wears No. 37, the same number that Shaun Alexander of Boone County wore when he won Mr. Football honors in 1994. Fulmer's dad was a longtime assistant at Boone County, so Jay followed Alexander's career closely. How do the two players compare? Always interesting to read hype like the above article and then see what happened. Gibson played 2 years at UK and then finished his career at Youngstown State. I wonder if Coach Fulmer still thinks he is better than Alexander?

I was just curious...do those that feel coach Matney was wrong for allowing JJ to break the record in the manner in which things transpired think coach Jay Fulmer was equally wrong for allowing Monquantae Gibson to break the old record set by Jeremy Britt?

Then in the following week, the record is smashed against a winless opponent who, incidently, had their highest scoring total of the season - 33 - the most since week 1.

 

It seems pretty obvious to me that coach Fulmer learned something from the running clock situation the week before and made sure that the game was closer the week Gibson broke the record.

I watched the video of the game on ihigh. The only parts of the event that "bothered" me was the 4th quarter.

 

1) While subbing on defense freely from 2nd Quarter on, the O-Line starters played the whole game. As did the QB who was obviously limping from about 8 minutes on. I never understood why a new QB was not put in to hand the ball off.

 

2) The way JC kicked a Field Goal late on first and goal then on the kickoff sent out an all young linemen KO team who covered the kick like they did not want to get in the way of the runner. When the Kicker ran off the field in front of the returner, and ran to the WRONG sideline it made me more than a little suspicious that a conscious attempt was up to "let the YellowJackets score" in order to get the ball back and go after setting a larger record.

 

3) When Jude collapsed on his last run (a 60 yarder called back for a penalty) the kid could not get up and literally crawled off the field to the far end zone. I never saw him reappear and the game was soon over.

 

The Jude kid is a warrior and deserves all the accolades. If the Gibson game revealed any of the above, I'd have a real problem with that one too. Just my take. :thumb:

This coming from a guy who's team put up 70 points on teams the past two years. 70-0 on Caverna in 09 and 75-6 this season against Fulton County. You think putting 75 points up on a team and having a 69 & 70 point difference is taking the high road? How dare you come on here and say the JC coaches are classless. I'll tell what buddy people that live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. The final score was 68-36 and that's heck of alot closer than some of the scores that your Mayfield Cardinals have been putting up by you taking the high road. You even commenting on this game and calling out other coaches who you don't even know is in itself classless and reaks with hypocrisy seeing your past track record.

Mayfield beat Crittenden County 38-19 tonight. After stopping the Rockets on fourth down, with more than a minute left, Mayfield took a knee twice instead of going for another score.

I seem to recall a game against Breathitt a couple of weeks ago where they did the same thing. I gues they're not so evil afterall. Thanks for sharing that information about what Mayfield did last night, it's sure going to make my weekend go much better after reading that.

I didn't make any accusations about Johnson Central, which wouldn't be very smart on my part because I haven't seen them play.

 

You might keep that in mind when you start making such assumptions about Mayfield and others that you know nothing about.
