They would need to make up two games not be two behind. Essentially 1.5 behind. SF plays SD this weekend and SD is 10-5 against SF. I'd say it could have mattered. Not sure where you are getting your numbers. The Reds needed to make up 2 games against the Giants going into last night's game because the Giants hold the tiebreaker edge over the Reds. The Reds would have to had gone 4-1 and hoped the Giants would go 2-3, or the Reds 5-0 and the Giants 3-2. I didn't see that happening.
September 30, 201015 yr I don't mind resting starters. I just really think its crazy to rather go to Philly than SF. I am with you on this. I would not want to see Philly in a short series or any series really. Halladay, Oswalt, Hamels and you could be done. Especially with how hot those three are right now. I think they're more dangerous than SF. Add in the Phillies lineup and it makes it very very tough.

From the top of the organization to the last player on the 40 man roster, the Reds celebrated like it was V-E Day, or like they had just won the World Series. I half expected a ticker-tape parade down Vine Street on Wednesday. The Reds were up by 6 games with 6 left to play. Our 6 games were against teams with sub-500 records. The Cards have been sub-500 since the All Star break. Was clinching really all that much of a surprise? Tuesday night's post game celebration was the best television I have watched in a long time. The party was great. I just wish it would not have come at the expense of giving away Wednesday's game and the last hope of a #2 seed.

You're not grasping that the Giants winning made what happened in the Reds game irrelevant. The Reds play their starters and win, and the Giants win, and they're still 2 games back with 4 to play.

It's missing the Phillies in a best of 5 when there's an extra off day in that series. Check Atlanta's road record, starting pitching, and injury issues and explain to me why they wouldn't rather finish 2nd than 3rd.

They needed to make up two games with five left. SF's last three games are against a team that is 10-5 against SF. The flaw with your argument is if they would have caught and passed SF they would have played Atlanta at home. The only way they could play SF in SF is if SD is the wild card. To throw away a game like they did last night was dumb. I'm not sure who's decision it was, but it wasn't a good one.

If given the choice I'd rather have to play Philly in a 5 game series as opposed to a 7 gamer... I'd assume we'll see matchups of: Game 1: Halladay vs. Arroyo Game 2: Oswalt vs. Volquez Game 3: Hamels vs. Wood Game 4: Halladay vs. Cueto Game 5: Oswalt vs. Arroyo I'd rather see Homer out there than Wood, but with the large number of lefties in the Phillies lineup, it's almost a given Wood is going to get a start IMO.
