What kind of objects were being thrown?

 

Looked to be some kind of wadded up paper/plastic thing. Ryle player made a heck of a throw back into the stands.

Nah, they are a very solid team. They just lack a big target and their receivers were having a hard time tonight. Hempel is a very good QB and Elliot is a stud. They ahve a very nice offensive line with some very nice size. Their defense looked pretty solid at times, they did give up a big play or two but Highlands for the most part got some scores off short fields.

 

I think its between SK and Ryle for Class 6A supremecy in NKY.

I think the play of the game came in the 3rd qtr. or maybe early in the 4th qtr. MR. Elliot met Mr. Sullivan -- talk about a train wreck. I think the refs got the call right: off setting penalties for both teams. Great collision, but the ref was blown up too, but he appeared to be injury free. :thumb:

 

On a side note, we had Beechwood's scouts sitting in the next row behind us. I won't repeat what they were saying, but it was mostly talking about Highlands, and mostly talking about comparison to the previous Highlands teams. Some of it was not positive -- sorry Bird fans, I can't repeat it on a public forum. Don't get me wrong, they weren't trashing Highlands. Here is one thing: they couldn't make a one-on-one tackle; they always needed at least two or more to bring the ball carrier down.

Does anyone know what happened in the 3rd quarter, when Ryle's offense was called for a penalty -- but nothing happened? It was a 3rd down pass, which fell incomplete, but Ryle was called for a penalty. The ref placed the ball right where it started, but they kept it marked as 3rd down. If HHS would have taken the play, it should have been 4th down. It there was a penalty, it would have been marked off. Everyone on our side of the field was livid, but the play stood. Only thing we could guess was that it was called "no play." After the next play went no where, I think Ryle did their quick-kick punt.

 

This was a sideline infraction called on Ryle -- a coach was probably outside the box -- the standards for team sideline etiquette have been increased and first infraction each game is a 'warning' after a penalty flag is thrown.

 

I will say that the sideline for the visiting team is inadequate -- way too tight with the wall and spectators milling around behind the ropes.

I like I said months ago Ryle is over hyped.

Defense Defense Defense. Superb defensive game for the Birds. Shut down Elliott and pressured Hempel. Textbook. Good licks on both sides of the ball. Emotions ran high a DCMS. Fans even throwing objects on the field. Warner animated as always at halftime. Towles looked shaky tonight. Nerves' date=' but settled in and salvaged the 1st half. Game could've gone anyway tonight. Offense looks anything but a sure thing in the Red Zone. Running game sputtered at times. Towles forcing a couple trying to make something happen. 1st real test of the Birds tonight. almost a carbon copy of last year's JC game although Ryle didn't gas out as bad as JC. Tonight was a preview of a future matchup in Eagleland. Towles passing saved their hides on more than a couple series. Alot of 3rd and longs for the Birds. He did overshoot a wide open receiver early that would've given them breathing room in the 1st half. Offense C+ Defense A+[/quote']

 

I think the news said Elliot still ran for 140 yards or so. I'm thinking they would have liked to shut him down more than that.

Some student threw a plastic ball on the field that the cheerleaders had thrown into the stands. I would not praise Mr. Sullivan for what he did to Mr. Elliott and then others that joined in. You had a team teetering on the brink of feeling defeated and then you pump them up with a nonsense play like that. If Ryle converts the first down and goes on to score thus making it a one possession game, does that make it a great play. Very disappointed in what occurred even if there was jawing going on prior to that play. What if one or all four players would have been ejected? Maybe that is something that needs to be thought about the next time this situation presents itself.

 

I agree with most on here that the turning point in the game was the touchdown pass by Towles at the end of the first half and then Ryle fumbles on its first possession of the second half to go from being up 7 to down by 5. From there Ryle started doubting itself a little and Highlands took control. IMO Ryle wore down both mentally and physically as the game went on which is an attribute that Highlands seems to have on most everyone they play.

#52 would be Mac Volett. Known to some as Mac "truck" Volett. Now you know why. There were lots of big hits on both sides of the ball. Can't wait for Round 2 in later October.

They should have been at the Dixie Heights game, sounds like they could have used all of their tackling knowledge of the game there.

No I don't believe Hemp benches above 340 or runs around a 4.6. I much rather be hit by Hemp. Most of Elliotts hits were on D at end. He almost knocked Streeter back 5 yards at the end of the game on a block.

I believe he had 151 on 13 carries if I recall the stats correctly. Definitely wasn't shut down by HHS defense.
