The defense, wow need to work on tackling. So many arms and not many wraps. It was a terrible display of tackling and my young FTJFL players will hear about it this morning. Need more help on the defense line; Austin H played extremely well in the 2nd half and Sully made some plays and yes as mentioned Abner had a fantastic hit; but I assume he was still smarting over his play earlier in the game. Ab will be fine! Bruns was missing and boy did it show! Still HHS played a very skilled and fantastic team; It really will help the Defense get ready, I have no doubt that they will rise to the challenge.

 

Austin H did turn it on and had a good 2nd half. That was good to see. Don't overlook the game Devin Bruns had...including his sack/forced fumble early in the 3rd quarter.

 

You better believe Abner will be fine...he is an outstanding corner and will be instrumental in leading the defense this year.

I have to comment on this. It was a sweat bowl out there last night. HHS starting DBs, one missed the entire game the other missed most with cramps. Maybe the best DBs in the state, from what I have seen and I am knowlegeable. The offense put up 42 points, probabley 400 yards passing, #25 ran like a man, and the last drive two of their starting receviers gutted it out with cramps the entire drive. Taking nothing away from Trinity because they are a class program and yes won the game, but to hop off the band wagon is not what HHS fans should start doing. They ended up 40 yards short of the end zone on their last drive against one of the best 6A teams in Kentucky.

I'm certainly not jumping off the band wagon, as you put it. My point is that Highlands may not win all their games by 30 points this year, which is what I honestly believe some HHS fans expect from the 'Birds this season. The scrimmage exposed some areas of weakness which this team will need to address, and I have no doubt they will over the course of the season. From everything I have read, Highlands played very hard last night and just happened to get beat by a better team. Typically in football, the better team wins. Both teams will take lessons from the scrimmage and apply them to future opponents. And one last thing... you mentioned it was a sweat bowl last night, which I'm sure it was. However, it sounds like the Trinity players were either better conditioned, better managed medically (i.e., having better hydration status) or were substituted more effectively, since no one is reporting that it affected the T players nearly as much as it did the HHS players. This is certainly one lesson HHS can take from the scrimmage.

 

Far from jumping off the band wagon, I am actually very pleased to see HHS' offense perform so well both rushing and passing. It also sounds like the kicking game is very strong. Highlands' defensive coordinator is one heck of a coach and I have no worries that the defense will improve as the season progresses. Go 'Birds!

I told my son who has played hoops against him in AAU ball, I said you see Quick, that kid will be playing on Sundays one day. I mean he just looks the part and is elusive as can be. He didnt show burner speed just great elusiveness and a ton of moxy for a sophomore.

 

Quick eluded the best of the best at the AAA State HS 200 meter sprint championship AS A FRESHMAN! His time would indicate he could beat AC by about 20 yards. Sprinters of this caliber that can carry a ball and cut are rare, and the Sunday prediction is very realistic. Everyone else is in slow motion comparatively speaking.

Congrats to both schools/teams for playing this game. A win-win for both. Glad to hear there were no (major) injuries. The T fans have been saying "we are young - inexperienced - and have a lot to learn." That is a serperate issue from talent. Maybe that might have some bearing on the D (or lack ) last night. Also not to be forgotten - is the team on the other side of the ball. HHS one of the premier programs in the State. They will and obviously did - test their opponents.

The scrimmage was played like both teams had 19 state titles. Enough said.

 

It was nice that T had the game on webcast. Maybe next webcast T could give the guys doing the webcast a T roster. It sounded like they were calling numbers , but didn't have many names to go with those numbers. It seemed like the names and numbers that they knew were from memory of last years players for T. They seemed to be doing OK with the H players , so I think they had an H roster.

 

I was not at the scrimmage , so correct me if I'm wrong. It seemed like when either team was close to a first down it was given to them. I brought this issue up after last years H vs X game. Did the chain gang come out on the field to make a measurement ? Did they change the rule so "almost " ten yards is a first down. I know the scrimmage was being timed , no longer than 3 hrs , so that could have been the reason for not making measurements.

Trinity scored 49 on Highlands; Highlands scored 42 on Trinity, they both should be able to score 50 on any KY team each Friday.

Yeah, tell me about it. It's a shame that they are under contract with the local bottler. They don't have the luxury of going to the grocery and picking up a case of water for .20cents a bottle and for a bigger bottle. It is a rip off all across the board really. Oh well, maybe we can get a new score board out of them. The bottler that is.

I am curious how the JV and Frosh did in their abbreviated games. I saw Donovan McCoy playing QB for the JV and he looked fast. Its too bad he isnt used on the Varsity Defense. He was arguably the best frosh player i saw in Nky last year as a freshman. He led the team in tackles from Mlb spot and played QB. There has to be a spot on that defense where he would excel.

I totally agree with you about McCoy.. He would be an animal on defense..
