July 9, 201016 yr 0 outs, men on 1st & 2nd. If I was the manager, I would make the batter bunt; however, Jay Bruce is not a good bunter & I think you're better off letting him swing. If you are going to bunt there, you should pinch hit for Bruce. He simply is not a good bunter. He's never been asked to bunt. Right or wrong, he can't do it. So, letting Bruce swing away was the right call there, IMO. If you're convinced your guy can't bunt in an obvious bunt situation then you pinch hit. Its that simple unless there was no one on the bench. I didn't watch (had to follow online). Did he still have subs to go in for Bruce?

July 9, 201016 yr You guys have absolutely cracked me up. You say Bruce can't bunt , never has been able to, and never will be able to. That's kinda what I hear from my developmental math students. They come up with every reason in the world why they can't do math. But they learn different. You become good at math through repetition and practice. You become a good bunter through repetition and practice. Little leaguers can do it, my sister can do it, LRCW can do it, Jay Bruce can do. You can't honestly think otherwise. I guarantee if he practiced the art of bunting two hours a day for the rest of the season, he would be an excellent bunter by season's end. He simply has not gotten in enough reps. Same thing I tell my students when they are having trouble factoring a trinomial--- Get in more reps, kids! Everyone can do math with enough practice; Jay Bruce can lay down a bunt with enough practice. Is there something that makes Jay any different than my innumerate students? They become better with practice. Even an hour a day would make Jay an accomplished bunter. Practice may not make him perfect, but he'd be able to get one down more often than not. It's incredulous to think otherwise.

So you want Bruce to waste his valuable time becoming a good bunter, when he is only in that situation a hand full of times. Thus losing time to work on his stroke, or his fielding.. Makes sense to me.

Thus losing time to work on his stroke, or his fielding.. Makes sense to me. It doesn't take much to be a "good" bunter. Heck, just be a "fair" bunter. If pitchers can do it I know that a batter who sees 2000 pitches per year can figure out how to get it down. We're not talking about learning to drag bunt.
