Yes I can read thanks but calling someone a pre-season all american sounds a little different than calling someone a pre season player of the year. Player of the year sounds like it has already been accomplished in my book. I hope he stands out this year, Im a big fan so you shouldnt detect anything negative from my post. I was just wondering why it was termed that way. I know its all about 20n10 also : ).

See my posts earlier as I always give Highlands much credit, but I also do question why they don't play Louisville St. X or Trinity every year, and I question both from the Bluebirds perspective, and the Tigers and Shamrocks side.

 

Playing Ryle twice tough enough, Beechwood okay I can grasp that from a local standpoint, Boone County-sorry Rebels fans, but I don't EVER remember Boone beating Highlands, and I was there last year in Fort Thomas and it was not a game.

 

Why not the clash of titans? I think they should play one of the two every year, and that way there will be zero arguments about who is the best team in Kentucky. Obviously there is communication going on, because they play a scrimmage vs. Trinity.

 

Let the rebuttals roll in and I remember Highlands beat Cincinnati St. X last year-why aren't they playing again? I also remember many a times the Bluebirds thought they could handle Elder or another Cincy GCL school and it didn't happen.

Personally I like the HHS vs. GCL matchups more than the one with the Louisville teams. Much better atmosphere and energy around the GCL games. The games with St. X just didn't have that aura around them. That being said, it's probably easiert to schedule one of these games than two. So I'd prefer a GCL matchup for HHS.

My opinion is based on past experience. The GCL matchups were much better attended than the Louisville St. X games. If you remember the 1st Elder matchup at PBS had a huge crowd. They had to let people in for free because they hadn't printed enough tickets. Highlands at Elder is always a 10,000 person sell out. The Colerain games were very well attended. On the flip side, I believe it was 06 when St X came up from Louisville and played at PBS in front of a very small crowd. The 05 game played at Manuel stadium between the the Birds and Tigers was nothing special as far as crowd. I did like that old stadium though. So I'm not sure about a scrimmage. Maybe your right, but recent history wouldn't support that as fact. In my opinion Highlands playing and beating a top GCL team is bigger than the same against a Louisville team. Gotta remember we work with fans from these teams.

Just to keep things interesting in the offseason, I have some questions...

 

First, are wins/losses against top-tier Cincinnati teams like Colerain, Elder, Moeller and St. Xavier viewed differently by Highlands players, coaches and fans than wins/losses against Louisville Trinity and St. Xavier? Is losing to a team like Colerain or Elder more 'acceptable' to the Highlands faithful than losing to a Kentucky team like Trinity or St. Xavier? Is beating a major Cincinnati program more impressive to HHS than beating one of the Louisville "Big Two?"

 

Also, how do the Highlands faithful think the 'Birds would fare against Louisville St. Xavier and Trinity if they had to play at least one of them EVERY YEAR, as one BGP'er has suggested? Would Highlands be expected to win >50% of these games,

That makes no sense. Preseason anything sounds like preseason to me. Nothing awarded yet. Just going on past performances and what they feel will happen this year. Oh, and the "Yes I can read" comment,:ohbrother:

I thinks it's GREAT that Abner was named pre-season POY! Congrats to him! I'm sure he'd rather be 20n10, though. BUT, it's great publicity for him. He got "noticed" for his work..we all like that, don't we? Now, he has to back it up...which I'm sure he'll do! AND it's very helpful in getting recruited. Again, CONGRATS to Austin!

Keep in mind that my answers to your questions are, as everyone else's would be, pure speculation on my behalf.

 

Is a win over a GCL team more "impressive" than a win over T or X and are wins over a GCL team viewed differently than a win over X or T? I don't know. But a win over a GCL goes a lot further in getting "respect" from our football fan brothers right across the river. Since more of us work with and know people from Cincy than Louisville, it's probably more important than a win over X or T. Also, with Ohio being considered nationally as much more of a "football state" than Ky is, a win over a top Ohio school is, I would think, more significant than a win over a top Ky school. And make no bones about it, Dale thinks the high national rankings are important to his players.

 

I have long stated that it would be tough for Highlands to beat able to beat T or X on a consistent basis because of the huge size advantage (and if any one responds with the silly response that size of a schoo doesn't matter because you only have 11 on the field at one time, that poster will immediately go on my "ignore" list). However, over the last couple of years, Highlands has been able to dramatically reduce the number of "both way" players. If Highlands can continue to do that and field high quality one way players on both O and D, the previously mentioned size advantage is greatly diminished. It doesn't go away completely however. Even simple logic indicates that when you have 1200 boys to find 22 starters vs having 400 boys to find 22 starters, you odds are better when the pool is 1200. But if Highlands can continue to two platoon with quality athletes, I'd guess we'd win 50%. Again it's a guess pulled out of my .............................................................................................

I know in talking with Dale that he attempted to schedule T for last year and this year. We could only do it one week and that week didn't work for T. T wanted it another week and that week didn't work for Highlands. So it didn't happen. Again, keep in mind that if Dale can schedule a GCL team, he'll do that first because of the national exposure a win provides plus he knows the gate will be very strong (likely as strong as the gate vs T or X) and he doesn't have the travel expense. That only makes sense.

I agree 100%. In the state of KY's eyes a win over St. X or Trinity seems more important but a win over a top GCL school bodes better for Highlands on the national stage!

And the Bluebirds will play neither this year.....................I'm gonna keep a keen eye on Dale as I think he is up for going for the mythical national championship without playing ANY of the biggest contenders in his state or right across the river in Cincinnati.
