April 22, 201016 yr I think that the universe is just too large and has too great a possibility for life for there not to be intelligent life on other worlds. There are billions and billions of stars... I have to believe that somewhere, even if far off in the outer reaches of the cosmos, there is at least one small star with one small planet with at least some sort of civilization on it. That said, I've never seen anything that's convinced me that beings from another planet have visited this one. Took the words right out of my mouth.

April 22, 201016 yr :thumb: Odds are there are 100000000s of other life forms out there and 1000000s of intelligent life forms. Space is so vast that it is difficult for the human brain to comprehend it. One light year is about 5.7 Trillion miles. The "observable" universe is approximated at something like 13.7 Billion light years across... Almost 16 sextillion miles in diameter and 2.1275536308264 x 10^69 cubic miles... That is enough to bake my noodle. Seems like an awful waste of space if we are it. You and I think alike. The overwhelming odds say there is a gazillion other forms of life in the universe ranging from simple life to much more advanced life than we have here on Earth.

They are so far away from us we will become extinct before we can make contact with them or they will be advanced enough to somehow contact us.

April 22, 201016 yr Probably would. But how much and what would it take to get there? The distance factor alone is big hurdle to overcome. If a craft could achieve the speed of light it would still take almost 4.5 years to get to the nearest star Alpha Centauri. So a round trip would almost take 9 years.

So a round trip would almost take 9 years. Relativistic math is even more baffling than the vastness of space. Due to time dilation, if my calculations are correct the 9 year there and back journey to Alpha Centauri at 99% the speed of light would mean that to an observer on Earth 63 years would have passed here. However, the effects of relativistic speed to the traveller, the slow down of time, and the contraction of space all change the equation. The rate of acceleration on the journey also changes things because you can not simply hit the gas and and be at 99% the speed of light without the G forces ripping the human body to shreds. Long space travel would require some sort of constant acceleration and deceleration in the 1 to 3G range. All of this further complicates the equations. I need more coffee before attempting this math...
