It would not be hard to believe that any of the schools listed as having offered Pike were doing so based on his size, athleticism, and speed....Truth is, they might not care if he ever throws a football again in his life. He may very well project as a TE or DE in college. I doubt any of his offers are dead set on him being a QB since none of the Teams offering have ever seen him play QB against a decent team in Varsity action. If people will remember, Derek Smith had some big time offers very early, but nobody knew exactly for what position for sure until he was a Senior. Could be the same for young Mr. Pike.

I have a question, If he is 17 as a sophmore will he be in jeopardy of not being able to play his senior year? I thought there was some rule that you could not be 19 before August of your senior year. Someone please help me with this one.

As stated by LN as long as he's not 19 before August 1 of his senior year he's fine. A kid being held back is common.

I was just curious, why would he have trouble playing quarterback at 6'8. I would think it would make it easier to see over the line.

 

Mobility would become limited. How many 6'8 guys do you know playing QB at any level? Even the 6'6 guys who play are more drop back passers with limited mobility. I like him at 6'5 230, if he stayed that size many would be happy at Highlands. Strong arm, great leader with a voice that carries and he is a true gamer. He should have a very nice year and I expect him to run and throw a lot.

Yep I graduated at 17, could of had two more years of highschool. I wonder all the time how that would of been.

I was looking at a talent comparison by age and maturity across the board with the upcoming soph/junior to be class that he is in. No harm meant.

The only reason it is an issue, is because Zeke is a well known athlete, and he made the decision in the 7th grade to hold back. Had his parents decided to wait a year to send him to kindergarten or 1st grade, most of us wouldn't even know his age.

 

His parents made the decision to hold him back for whatever reason, athletic, scholastic maturity etc. He is with in the KHSAA guidelines, so it is a moot point anyway.

 

If I thought holding my kids back a year would allow them to earn a full scholarship to college, athletic or scholastic, I would do it in a heart beat.

Good points made. It is really hard to blame a parent for holding a kid back for whatever reason. There will always be people that want to gripe and complain about the situation, but until it is your own kid, its hard to understand the situation fully. If you begin to look at some of the local tuition costs at some of the state colleges and universities, they are rediculous. If Zeke is not held back, now he may just be your middle of the pack average player in NKY with a chance to earn a scholarship somewhere, by holding him back, now he is one of the top players with great scholarship possibilities to big D1 schools. Either way, dont fault the kid for putting in the work to EARN the scholarship.

Reguardless of his age I still don't believe Pike is the best QB or even the 4th best one up here. I would like to see how he does against the likes of Highlands and Beechwood then I'll make a judgement from there but for now he's just a kid who has thrown for a lot of yards in some JV football games.

I don't think there is any doubt that an extra year of maturity would help any player. But Pike is 17 and he is receiving these offers. If he were not held back, he would still be 17 and the same athletically so I think he would still be receiving offers. If he had received no interest and then as an 18 year old senior who was held back started receiving offers, then your comment could be applied to Pike. My point is, as it stands now, those comments about age have little relevance to 17 year old Pike.
