NCAA to expand tourney to 96 teams?

If they could do that, it would have been done long ago. As it stands the NCAA gets zero cut from post season football...

Why can't they do it? Isn't the NCAA controlled by the member school Presidents?

Heck, why even have a tourney? Team might feel excluded--let's just give everybody a participation trophy.

It's the member school presidents that don't want the NCAA getting their hands on the money...

As I guessed before reading the article, it is all about TV money. There is only one thing that would make me think there is some value in this (beyond lining the NCAA's pockets) - give a guaranteed spot in the tournament to the regular season conference champions as well as the tournament winner.

Otherwise, I don't like the idea at all. Everyone complains about teams on the bubble etc. but under the current system, virtually every single D1 team is already in the tournament - through conference tournaments and then the NCAA tournament any team can win the title. No one is getting left out. Some teams lose their way out and that is there fault. The 30 or so teams that don't win their bids and get invites to the NCAA tournament are getting second chances to win a title, similar to district runner ups in KY getting into the regional and still having a chance to win a state championship.

Bobby Knight mentioned a few years ago going to 128 teams. It would only add 1 game, and the higher seeds could all host the first NCAA game at their place. While I don't like expanding it that much, not a bad idea.

I am looking forward to it moving to ESPN. There will be a lot more games televised.

I just wonder if they will charge for it like they do their ESPN Fullcourt package.

I could see a premium option, but you could count on heavy game coverage on ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU. Most of the games on Full Court are not produced by ESPN so they have to pay a fee to show them on the subscription package...

There are never more than four NCAA tournament games happening at one time. I agree that ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU would be likely tournament TV sites. What do you think would be the fourth game site? Classic? And do you think ESPNU and Classic, etc. would become more available prior to ESPN getting the tournament?

If they did have a premium service (and you know they likely would) I could see two games on at all times on those three stations, and the third being used as a studio/cut in option with the other games on the pay service. ESPNU and Classic are available on pretty much every outlet now and most have it on the standard package, so I doubt you'd see much change there...

This is an absolute joke. It almost makes the regular season meaningless. Its also going to going to coaches more leeway when it comes to them being on the hotseat and/or wanting an extension. A guy could say that he led the team to 5 straight NCAA appearances but it was only because the field was watered down. Hell, they could even have been the #24 seed and made the tournament. Its absolutely ridiculous.

The NCAA is getting ahead of themselfs, they need to wait another 15-20 years before doing this.96 teams is just too many at this time. But again what do I know.:idunno:

That sucking sound you hear is the NIT being pulled out of the arena exhaust system.
