It doesn't taken a soothsayer or a guru to see that Ole Miss was a fraud, Tebow has struggled, no really good pro quality QBs to speak of, LSU scores like it is a baseball game, or that any other team was that great. What makes the SEC look good is that the other conferences have done nothing to separate themselves from where they normally are. The Big 12 had a shot with two Heisman hopefuls returning, but they have looked bad. The SEC may be the top conference (i.e. #1) in the land this season, but it is by default. I am not sure it is overrated compared to other conferences, but not #1 compared to the SEC of year's past.

If my two best teams in my confrence were both undefeated on a down year, then what is an up year?? This is partly true though, last years Florida team is better than this years Florida team, but to say that the SEC is down when the SEC championship game is basically the national title game is not a very accurate. Like mentioned before all of college football is down this year, so the standard is lowered for everyone, and the SEC is still the best IMO. Leaders of the SEC east and west have zero losses.

I think this is more of a case of college football, as a whole, being down. Not a great team out there this year.

Sorry, but I keep thinking back to 2006. I have had this gnawing sense of deja vous all season.

I think the reason why many people see the SEC down when SEC play begins is because you don't really see to many great offensive performances in SEC games. Offense is what attracts people, and seem to make people think teams are really good. So when people watch SEC games, they don't see great offensive performances. Its because the defenses in the SEC are usually some of the best in the country. However once bowl season comes around, you will see the offenses look a little better going against defenses that are not as good, while the defense still does great and that is why the SEC seems to win the majority of their bowl games. Defense is what usually sets the SEC apart from the other conferences, but defenses just don't get as noticed as high scoring offenses in other conferences.

Doyell is just trying to get a rise out of people. If the SEC isn't the best conference then I'd like to know who is.

By that logic, the Pac-10 should be getting way more credit than it does, because it typically produces a lot of offense.

 

I think the SEC often gets judged against itself, and generally its hard to win that fight. Take Doyel's article as an example...basically all he says is that the SEC isn't as good as it has been. It's what he doesn't say that says more to me...he makes no argument for any other conference threatening the SEC this season, because a good one can't be made. It's down, but so is the rest of college football.

 

He focuses on the #1 ranking. He throws Texas, who has been in the same boat as 'Bama and Florida...winning, but not as impressive as expected, as an option to be #1. Then, a one-loss USC...then a Cincinnati team that he admittedly downplayed a short time ago.

The SEC is going to have to win a BCS championship sometime to prove that they are the best football conference. Oh wait a minute, .... I think they might have won 1 at some point.

 

Doyel is just trying to stir the pot. No harm. Yes, the SEC is down. But I see more parity across college football now than I have in quite some time. I can't figure which conference is better top to bottom. But the gap that many thought was there is not as wide anymore. His argument would mean much more if he would say who he thinks has the best conference right now if it isn't the SEC.
