The SEC isn't as far ahead as it normally is, but it is still far and away the best.

 

Pac 10- USC lost to a team with a losing record, Oregon got thumped at Boise State, Cal turned out to not be so great this season.

 

Big 12- Oklahoma is hurting because of injuries but hey it is what it is, Texas Tech is terrible again this year, Oklahoma State lost to Houston, the Big 12 north has been a joke for a few years now.

 

ACC-Maryland and Virginia both lost to FCS schools. Florida States win over BYU looks good but they haven't done anything else all season. The top 2 or 3 teams here are good but beyond that it's a complete waste land at the bottom. Duke won consecutive conference games against bottom teams this year, what does that tell you. Also UNC is not nearly as good as anyone expected.

 

Big 10- Until they earn some big out of conference wins can't argue for them.

 

Big East- Cincinnati is nice, but not sold on anyone else. WVU lost to the 5th best team in the SEC West in Auburn and they are considered at least 3rd in the Big East right now, what does that tell you.

As long as top college underclassmen enter the NFL draft, NCAA football will be down from where it could be.

 

How many top SEC players left their university early in last year's NFL draft?

 

I know Matthew Stafford from Georgia was the first pick. Put him on this season's Bulldog team and they might be hard to beat. Antone Davis from Alabama is another one.

 

Does the SEC have more players coming out early than the other conferences? My guess would be "yes".

If you're going to cite reasons why the SEC is not the best conference, couldn't you at least come up with some reasons other than the SEC loses to other teams in the SEC?

 

He says the SEC is weak because Ole Miss got exposed by South Carolina? Everyone knew that Ole Miss wasn't the #4 team in the nation & everyone knew USC would give them everything they can handle.

The Pac-10 is stronger and had been getting that way for two seasons. The ACC is better this year, though still not great. Miami and Georgia Tech's resurgence have helped.

 

The Big 12 has fallen way, way off from last year and the SEC is down. Those were the strong conferences last year, and I think that magnifies everything.

 

Isn't it hard to make that statement when Oregon was spanked by Boise, Cal was drubbed the other day, and USC lost to Washington and escaped what appears to be a good (but not great) Ohio State?

Not one on here. I said that, and people thought it was crazy. I don't buy that at all.

It doesn't taken a soothsayer or a guru to see that Ole Miss was a fraud, Tebow has struggled, no really good pro quality QBs to speak of, LSU scores like it is a baseball game, or that any other team was that great. What makes the SEC look good is that the other conferences have done nothing to separate themselves from where they normally are. The Big 12 had a shot with two Heisman hopefuls returning, but they have looked bad. The SEC may be the top conference (i.e. #1) in the land this season, but it is by default. I am not sure it is overrated compared to other conferences, but not #1 compared to the SEC of year's past.

There's the perception out there, right or wrong, that Alabama and Florida have hung onto their spots with some assistance from officials.

 

However, if they HAD lost a couple of close games to conference foes, how does this bolster the argument that the conference as a whole is down?

 

I agree with whoever said that college football is down all over. No knock on these schools at all, but with TCU, Boise and UC all top 10 material, that tells you something.

The SEC is down in my eyes this year, however the strength of the conference as compared to others will be measured when the bowl games come around.

Florida is a top team with or without Percy Harvin as is Alabama with or without Andre Smith.

 

Put Stafford and Moreno on this year's Georgia team and you have a powerhouse. Top 10 team probably.

 

The SEC is down by the standard they have set, but I am sure their bowl record this season versus out of conference, inferior opponents will show their true strength.

 

Regardless of what Gregg Doyel says, this is the premier conference year in year out. It is just different degrees of good each season.

Same story for the past couple of years. SEC is preseason best conference. As the year goes people start claim it's overrated. National title comes and they win it plus a majority of the bowl games they're in. The SEC has the overall best talent, best coaches and is the best conference.

Not a big deal...he can support his story and so on.

 

The thing about the SEC is that it is such a physical football conference. You see a fair amount of attrition of players from game to game through injury and what not...week in and week out it is a battle.

You may get a breather every now and again, but it is a physical physical league.

The PAC 10 teams are predicated on offense and the QB's in that league tend to throw up inflated numbers against bad defenses.

The SEC is going through a cycle of young QB's....

To me an big time SEC game is a 14-10 type game...physical and so forth.

Tennessee's defense is really good, but Crompton has been bad for much of the year.

Again regarding Oregon State and USC, that was a three touchdown game and OSU never had the ball for a chance to win.

I agree overall it is down but that is primarily due to the QB play....Tebow isnt the same.

Its still the best conference top to bottom, IMO...but the PAC 10 is right there.

 

Its not all about style points.

Sagarin Ratings has Florida and Bama up there.

If you look at the numbers you can see why some teams came out in the BCS like they did.

For example, you look at UC's schedule strength, and they by far have the lowest SOS of the top 10 in the Sagarin's.

In the last two weeks I've gotten (with the help of a direct tv system) to watch Arizona, Stanford, and Oregon St., as well as South Carolina, Georgia, and Auburn. The teams in the middle of the Pac-10 really look like tough, tough outs, and the teams in the middle of the SEC just don't really look all that good.

 

At the very top, the SEC is very strong, but as you make your way down through the list, I would just see the Pac-10 winning more of those games head-to-head.

 

Its just an opinion, and I have no more evidence to go on than just my eyes watching the ballgames. The Pac-10 teams just look a little more "complete" this year.
