SEC football is overrated, and this is a dangerous position for me to take. Dangerous, because CBS has a working relationship with the SEC. At its highest levels, my company pays a lot more money to broadcast SEC football than it pays to publish me. Between SEC football and myself, one of us is expendable. And it's not Tim Tebow.

 

That said, I can't do it. Not for a second longer. I can't carry the water for a football conference that can't carry its own jock.

 

SEC football 2009 is not what it once was. It's certainly not SEC football 2008, when it had the best team in the country. That team was Florida, which laid a 24-14 whupping on Oklahoma in the BCS title game.

 

SEC football 2009 has been living off its past all season, and the backlash is coming. Maybe it's here already. Maybe, as I channel my inner Barack Obama, I am the change we've been waiting for.

Before anyone comments or agrees, Who's been saying this all season? I don't think it's as bad as this guy does, but it is down. UF and Bama are good, LSU is down (but still winning because of less strength in the SEC), Tennessee is still down, this is the worst UGA team in the last 6 or 7 years. For crying out loud South Carolina may be the 3rd best team in the SEC when it's all said and done.

SEC is down. But overall all of college football is down.

 

I have honestly felt the same about the SEC the past few seasons but their results in the Bowl games have been stellar... especially in the title game which they are now 5-0 in. Will this season be different? Who knows?

Not one on here. I said that, and people thought it was crazy. I don't buy that at all.

He talks about SEC being down and not deserving 1 and 2.......yet people defend USC at being 4 with a loss to a team with a losing record.........

Two weeks ago everyone though Florida and Alabama were clearly the two best teams. The last couple of weeks both have struggled... to SEC teams. Just saying.

College football as a whole is down in 2009 and that includes the SEC. Is Doyel making the mistake of judging the SEC against its past rather than judging it against the rest of the nation?

 

Down, yes, but its still the top conference in college football. So, I ask, how can it be overrated?

 

His support of Texas is laughable. People have been saying the same things about Texas this year as they have Florida and 'Bama. They haven't looked as good as advertised. Their most impressive victories are against a Bradford-less Oklahoma (by 3 points) and a 34-point beatdown of a Missouri team that's winless in the conference and hasn't played within 14 points of any Big 12 opponent. Regardless, I wouldn't argue if they jumped to #1. Those three teams are all in a position to control their own destiny and prove it on the field...it doesn't matter where they're ranked within that trio of spots.

 

USC lost a game...Barkley or not, they can't leapfrog those teams as long as they're undefeated.

 

If you want to make a point that the SEC is down in '09, few would argue. But, its disingenous to act is if the rest of college football has remained static while the SEC has suddenly forgotten how to play football.

 

The fact that the SEC is almost always judged against itself speaks volumes about the conference.

The Pac-10 is stronger and had been getting that way for two seasons. The ACC is better this year, though still not great. Miami and Georgia Tech's resurgence have helped.

 

The Big 12 has fallen way, way off from last year and the SEC is down. Those were the strong conferences last year, and I think that magnifies everything.

I think I agree with most of you. The SEC is down, but so is the rest of college football (minus the ACC maybe, but they were down already).

As long as top college underclassmen enter the NFL draft, NCAA football will be down from where it could be.

 

How many top SEC players left their university early in last year's NFL draft?

 

I know Matthew Stafford from Georgia was the first pick. Put him on this season's Bulldog team and they might be hard to beat. Antone Davis from Alabama is another one.

 

Does the SEC have more players coming out early than the other conferences? My guess would be "yes".
