Now with that said, I heard at the Christmas Walk last year that HHS and Colerain talked and couldn't agree on a date. Simple as that. Nothing more, nothing less.

 

HHS plays Ryle this week. I like the Birds in this one.

I personally believe that Dale tried to schedule Colerain and it did not work out due to the weeks available. It is not so easy to put a schedule together since certain weeks are committed to district games. I'm sure he felt Ryle twice was a secondary option, but we are glad to play the best twice. Only way to improve and see where you are. Lookin' forward to a battle against a great team on Friday night. The Raiders will show up and play well.

While I think a lot of fans don't look forward to playing the same team twice each year, in many ways it can be a great litmus test for a team to see how much they've improved from early to late in the season. It's not so much the case for Highlands O if Bardo isn't at qb and Collinsworth doesn't play, but the other positions can be evaluated. If Bardo doesn't play qb and Collinsworth doesn't play at all, the O line and the receivers are really going to have to step it up and play exceptional football so as not to put too much pressure on Towles. Ryle has a very nice football team and this will be the toughest test for the Birds since Bardo went out at qb.

 

I fully expect the Ryle O not to make the same mistake they made against Highlands the first time. Rather than trying to run the ball almost exclusively like they did in the first half of the first game, I think Ryle is going to go with a 50/50 balance of run and pass. Heck, with a qb like Hempel and receivers like Fugate and Nichols, it would be crazy not to keep the opposing D off balance by passing the ball. From what I know, Ryle had been doing such lately with good success. Frankly it will make Elliot and Eubanks more effective runners if Highlands D can't focus exclusively on the running game.

 

In order for Highlands to be successful, the O line like I said earlier is going to have to play exceptionally well and we are going to have to run the ball well. Receivers are going to have to run excellent routes, catch the catchable balls and lay out to catch those passes not on the money. They also are going to have to have excellent blocking from the receivers. Defense is going to have to play D like they did against X and CovCath. In my opinion, Ryle has a much better offense than either X or CovCath. So to that extent, this game will be a nice measuring stick for our D.

 

Ryle will be much tougher to beat this time than the last because I think their O coordinator has learned much since the last time. Should be one heck of a good game.

Obviously Bardo will not be at quarterback. But he will be able to play running back. He, along with Streeter and Fennell, make an excellent group of backs if Collinsworth is not able to play. I don't know what Collinsworth's situation is. I think Towles is progressing steadily and, while not yet the same caliber as Bardo as a quarterback, is getting there. I think Highands will have enough to win this game by 3 touchdowns. Having said that, Ryle is quite dangerous and can never be overlooked.

Just be glad Colerain played Highlands last year and not this year so you can continue to attempt to belittle Highlands, Dale and N. Ky football every chance you get.

You hit the nail on the head. The Cincy boys just can't stand the thought that some little KY team would dare to challenge their mighty power...and, God forbid...WIN! Reminds me of a scene from The Wizard of Oz.

This game has me puzzled in regards to strategy. Other than HHS' goal of being undefeated its a game that has no impact in regards to playoffs. Will each team play it close to the vest? Will Ryle hold back so that their playoff opponents do not see some formations they are working on?

 

Or will it be a huge game for both teams? HHS going undefeated? Ryle with a chance to make a statement?

Can't speak for HHS, but I can tell you that Ryle has every intention of playing this game full-tilt to win. At this point in the season, I don't think there's a ton of new strategies and formations that come into play. Maybe a wrinkle here and there, but at this point your offense is your offense and your defense is your defense. It will hopefully give us a good barometer of where we might stand should we beat PRP in the first round of the playoffs and meet up with St. X at their place in the second round.

Why would he get anymore than anybody else? He is still part of the team. If HHS is seen on any level on a "National" stage, then the whole team is. Now maybe a couple players might be viewed more closely than others, but Towles isn't one of those. Not yet anyway, but could be by next year.

I was wondering the same thing. Perhaps what he meant was that Towles is in the unique position of being a sophomore QB who starts for a nationally-ranked team... I doubt there are too many teams ranked in the USA Today Super 25 with sophomore starting QBs right now.

What I mean is that you have a 6'5 sophomore QB starting for the NO 8 team in the country. Once Highlands wins the state championship his name will start getting tossed around due to his position and roll in winning at such a young age. Throw in with that that he is a very talented QB right now with all the potential in the world and you are going to have coaches really looking at him the next two years. This year he will be in the shadow of a stellar senior class but the next season he will be a popular name in Nky and beyond. That's what I mean
