Are you guys trying to tell me that some of the JV boys that never get into a varsity game aren't thinking this? The thought that X might be really, really good and HHS might struggle and they might get their name mentioned on national TV? You think they haven't thought this? You're kidding yourselves.

 

I think you are confusing yourself. Here's why. Mueller won't pull his starters even if it's a blowout for X. The JV boys aren't seeing the field IMO. Either way.

After watching Boone play Anderson and then watching Boone play Highlands, I honestly don't think HHS can keep up with St.X. AC is only 1 guy, and even without him Highlands was not able to score at will, although they did score fairly easy on the pass plays. From what I saw, the Highlands defense can be picked apart by a precise offense that works the entire field. It's a great opportunity for the Birds to do something good, but even with all the "If" statements, it's going to take a perfect game by the birds to keep this close. Size, speed, and talent depth will be in favor of the Bombers. Homer or not, deep down you have to honestly see this as a long shot for the Birds, but at least they are taking the shot.

It was a simple comment. The nature of boys that never play is that they hope its a blowout in one direction or the other so that they can step onto the field late in the game.

 

Its no secret that X is a heavy favorite in this game. Therefore, SOME of the JV players PROBABLY have it somewhere in the back of their mind that SHOULD this game be a blowout for X (the heavily favored team) then they MIGHT get into the game and be on NATIONAL TV which would be very exciting for them. While they don't want to lose the game I GUARANTEE you that should it be a blowout them getting into the game and ON TV will be fun for them. Thus, the question about some of them quietly thinking about this.

 

Totally agree. :thumb: And it doesn't mean these kids aren't team-oriented or rooting for their teammates. But - just like the starting players - they have hopes also and it's hardly unreasonable to think they have a dream of getting in the game and on TV.

Maybe. But I can tell you firsthand that when Ryle went to state a few years back and got obliterated by Trinity, my son (a JV player at the time) told me after the game that he was kind of nervous/excited late in the game because he was thinking he might get to go in for a play or two. He didn't and that was certainly fine by him and us, but I would consider that a pretty normal reaction/thought by a 15 year old kid.

 

Hopefully, this will be a very tight ballgame all the way through and this mini-topic will be moot.

1. Yes, they want to get in but don't kid yourself that TV doesn't enhance the excitement level for them.

 

2. Can't answer your CCH question. I would assume that any player who practices all week looks forward to getting into a varsity game. I will also assume that had it been televised where they could record it and watch it back later that they, too, would have been even more excited to get in despite the ugliness of the score.

I don't think Clyde means anything negative about the boys or is trying to be smart. It is a glorious notion that all teenage boys are team oriented and do things that are best just for the team with no regard for their personal feeling. That'd be a great sports world. But reality is, a team player (Which I'm 100% sure every JV kid at HHS is) is also a teenage boy with feelings, hopes, and thoughts and to think that the thought hasn't crossed their mind like "Man we might get blown out Friday...St.X is unreal...I should get mom to tivo this just in case" is just naive. Everyone boy wants to hear their name on national television, don't care what school or what team you're playing for.

Your right.Turnovers are the great equalizers in football. When given the chance the Birds need to strip the ball while making the tackle.They also need to give St X a long field to work with.They also need to put pressure on the QB,some way,some how. If they double team Roller, somebody needs to step up and make a sure tackle. If they put a spy on Collinsworth somebody needs to step up and run like heck or make sure handed catches. There is plenty of talent on both of these teams ,and the winner is going to be whoever executes their game plan the best. As far as head coaches and coaching staffs in my opinion,they are the best around. I know both teams will play their hearts out and I pray there are no injuries on either team. Is it Friday yet??

Anyone besides me thinking there are some HHS JV boys quietly saying amongst themselves where no one else can hear: "Man, we're getting into this game and we're going to be on National TV!"
