Were any balls thrown to Nichols tonight for Ryle?

IMO it was a good game that could have been closer. I have to agree with many of the previous posts that going for it against a team like HHS and not playing field position is not bright! At first I almost thought it was because they did not have a boy that could punt (In high school ball that would have been funny but I was starting to think that until the boy boomed one that AC fair caught). Going for it on your own 20 in a close game in which you had a great opening drive. IMO that was not smart and then making a first down and then going for it on the next series with a fake punt. At that time and point of the game it was senseless. I thought I watching Dave Shula manage the bungles (matching colors). The Elliott boy was impressive needs to check his emotions a little because he has some mad skills. AC was in a class by himself today. That cut back near the endzone was a thing of beauty; so much so I spilled my drink. A couple of dropped passes, the receiving crew is better definitely a bad day. The boy from St X is fast but I watch him in warm ups, he has lineman hands in regards to catching the ball. Something to work on. I still think HHS has trouble containing the corners. The D comes up with some great plays and made some good adjustments but we still are going to have to play better to make a run at ST X. Keep working hard. IMO Ryle you showed some character and heart not yet in HHS class but I think you might be the team to beat in 6A around NKY, if your coach makes better decisions and mix up runs with passes and just play smarter. I think it was emotional on both sides of the ball; however I have to ask did anybody see that hold on a Ryle pass play in the middle of the field. HHS guy got tackled and the ref watched it (it was funny). I am sure some calls were missed both ways. I just thought that I could not pass that one up.

Good win for the Birds! Both teams played hard but the Birds just have too many option's to score with. Ryle decision to go for it on 4th down's had more to do with keeping Highlands offense off the field. (Limit possession's) Keep working hard to achieve your goal's. Still not hitting on all cylinders but an improvement over last week.

Ryle had their own miscues too - interceptions and a fumble inside their own five. You beat us fair and square. You were the better team without question. But please don't take this "it should have been much worse" tone. It's not only inaccurate, but comes off as rather petty.

 

Exactly. Was Highlands the better team tonight? For sure. Was there such a huge gap between them? IMO no. Ryle shot themselves in the foot at key times.

Two week's in a row now I have watched official's let too many late hit's happen. I'm not sure what their looking for to be called unsportman's like conduct. The hit on Highland's kicker was unbelieveable.(It was called) Something has to be done before somebody really gets hurt. Make the hit during the play not after.

Coop, Intersting you noted the third 4th down oppotunity. I watched the game through binoculars since I stood by the restrooms, and I thought he clearly had the first down.

 

Ryle's first drive was very nice, it looked like HHS was in for a fight. Elliott ran the ball hard on that drive. The fake punt was a bad decision, I have no problem with the 4th and one attempts but you can't give HHS a 40 yard field. Also the clock management on Ryle's last first half drive wasn't very good. I knew that 1:31 was way too much to leave out there, another short field for HHS and :15 seconds later (two plays) the game was over. Nice adjustments made by HHS after Ryle's scoring drive. It was apparent to me that Eubank hits the corner quicker than Elliott and I thought he made some nice runs for the Raiders. HHS defensively is very fast, nothing new there, they really get after it and bring plenty of game tackling punishment. Offensively, nice unit, but they aren't anywhere near clicking if you ask me. I can see the promise in Bardo but he is still wet behind the ear and will only get better, still 13 possible games so the sky is the limit. I really liked the three backs for HHS, Street, Fennell and Collinsworth are a nice three headed monster. I would have liked to have seen Collinsworth more active in the passing game, the kid is lightning quick and plays as if it's a PS3 character. HHS missed a few opportunities via the pass, two no doubt TDs if they complete the pass. Overall, I think Ryle could be the #1 6A option at this point, and they still can improve a ton. They need to sure up the passing offense, too much pressure on Hempel tonight. They've got the players to have a very impressive offense, Fugate made some plays, and with Elliott, Eubank and Nichols they should be able to keep teams on their toes. They need to utilize Nichols more in the passing game, he looks like he has a nice pair of hands, run that bad boy down the seam. It will be interesting to see these two play again at the end of the season, both should be improved.

 

I was at the game, it was an excellent call. It was wide open, just a poorly executed play. Ryle went for it earlier in the game on fourth and short, in worse field position, and it worked. Just because it doesn't work doesn't make it a bad call. Hindsight is always 20/20.

I didn't have a problem with the 4th and one call, I'll take my chances with a one yarder with Elliott toting the skin. If you think it was a good call then I respect your opinion but I can guarantee you aren't going to have many siding with you. Now if you know for certain your defense can hold on short field maybe I can see faking but I'm not one to give a talented offense a 40 yard field.

Met "Henry" tonight at the Highlands tailgate party. How's my credibility look with my prediction? Ryle with a serious punch in the mouth with a 90 yard TD drive to open the game. First personal foul on a touch back that I've ever seen put Ryle back on their 10 yard line. Highlands took the punch and answered in Highlands style. When does the fast running backs in Ft. Thomas mold get broken? I thought the score would have been closer if Ryle had played more field position football as the average yard line to start a drive had to be their own 45. But Ryle probably knew it was their only chance to win. I was impressed with Highlands pressure on Hempel. If Ryle is #2, could be another uneventful year in Nky for Highlands. (except for the trip to Park Hills of course) :dancingpa

Great point. The wide receiver position and the tight end position dramatically improved their blocking this week and it paid off as it allowed the RBs to get into the secondary with a full head of steam so they could do their magic.

 

Actually the blocking all around was very good. I know that people spoke a lot about Ryle's running game heading into the game. After the first drive, I thought our D did a good job containing Ryle's running game. Didn't shut it down completely, but certainly slowed it down. Roller, Dierig, Beck, Snyder, Alford and Compton each had very nice games against the run. I never felt that Ryle stopped our running game and we could have ran the ball all night if we wanted to. There were a lot of huge holes for the backs to run through. Well done boys. But I think Dale wanted to work on the passing game some because you can't win state or even think of beating X and other good teams remaining on the schedule just running the ball (did I just say that? ).

 

I thought Bardo looked good running and throwing the ball. Dale held back the qb runs last week and only ran Bardo once (for a 9 yd gain). It was there last week but Dale didn't call it. Threw the ball extremely well. Had some catchable balls dropped which would have made his stats even better. Perhaps the receivers spent too much time practicing their blocking this week and not enough time catching the ball.

 

Kudos to the Ryle kids and coaches. I know that some have questioned some calls by Ryle's coaching staff. I'd have done the same the coaches did. I think the coaches realized that their D wasn't going to stop the Birds O and were doing every thing they could to keep the ball out of our hands. A gamble no doubt, but a gamble worth taking. I came away from the game with the feeling that Ryle's D wasn't going to be able to stop our O whether we got the ball on our 5 or on Ryle's 5, so it didn't really matter where we got possession. We didn't punt once the entire game that I can recall.

 

Ryle has a couple of nice running backs. I remain a big fan of Hempel. Very nice qb. When given some time, he throws a nice pass. Very impressed with his "headiness".

 

Looking forward to the rematch at the end of the year and seeing how experience of a season has helped which team the most.

 

Congrats to both teams. Good luck to the Raiders the rest of the year. I haven't seen the other N. Ky. 6A schools yet this year, but I think Ryle will be right up there at the end of the season.
