Two week's in a row now I have watched official's let too many late hit's happen. I'm not sure what their looking for to be called unsportman's like conduct. The hit on Highland's kicker was unbelieveable.(It was called) Something has to be done before somebody really gets hurt. Make the hit during the play not after.

 

They both had some late hits in the game. The difference was that Ryle was flagged for theirs. There was one late hit by Highlands on the Ryle sidelines that we could not believe was not called and occurred right in front of a ref.

 

The unsportsmanlike penalties on Ryle for running their mouth are ridiculous. Ryle has an issue with a player or two can't seem to let their play on the field speak for itself. I greatly hope Coach Warner addresses this problem immediately.

Great point. The wide receiver position and the tight end position dramatically improved their blocking this week and it paid off as it allowed the RBs to get into the secondary with a full head of steam so they could do their magic.

 

You know Ryle struggled with the run when their leading tackler was a cornerback and almost all of his tackles were of a RB and QB.

Gang. It was 7-7 with less than 4 minutes to go in the first half. This was not a Highlands domination and The Birds put in their JV on Ryle's last drive with 2 minutes to play after kicking the much needed insurance field goal. Not sure about a field goal with a 34-14 lead and 2 minutes to play although their kicking game needs some work if you want to be honest. Not sure about the 3 first half gambles, of which only one worked for Ryle. But, I do like Coach Warner's style - it reflects in a team that is not afraid of anybody. Sophomore Travis Elliott probably had 150-175 yards, most in the first half. A 90-yard drive to open the game. Highlands proved to be the better team, but all of this hype about the best team in Birds history. Please give me a break. Yes, the Birds will win their 181st state title this year - not a doubt in my pea brain about that. But, you can better believe they know Ryle is much improved over last year and the game was far from a blowout. Congrats to the Raiders on championship effort. Collinsworth is very enjoyable to watch. Some of Highlands players like to kick after the whistle but no calls were made on 2 occasions. Enough comments. Life goes on and Ryle will have a very good season. Birds will win state in 5A.

You may be correct, but there is one more game this year between these teams. We'll see who improves more. I think I know who will!:thumb:

I think it was a good no-call.

 

I agree that the offensive lineman grabbed the defender after he got beat, but it was not as egregious as described. Moreover, it happened behind the point of attack and it did not materially affect the play.

 

Egregious or not, if it's a penalty make the call. But, we have to remember, it's still early for some of the refs also.

First of all congratulations to the Highlands team. It looks like they are on track for another stellar season.

 

Overall I think it was a great effort by the Ryle kids, but I have to agree with you on the coaching. The gambles on fourth down helped to put the game out of reach. Even if they had converted the first downs, they were still unnecessary risks to take at those points in the game and sent the message that either they had no confidence in their punt return coverage or that they felt they had to take some gambles to compete with Highlands.

 

Also, after an incredibly impressive opening drive by Ryle, the Highland coaching staff made the necessary adjustments to stop the run. This consisted primarily of stacking the box and blitzing at least one linebacker on every play. An easy adjustment when you play a coaching staff that is very poor at mixing up their plays and tends to run exclusively until they get behind. The Ryle staff didn't respond to these adjustments until the game was well out of reach.

 

Even though the score may not reflect it, I think the Ryle defense played a decent game. They are still prone to give up the big play and haven't quite figured out how to stop the quarterback draw, but they seem to be improving every week.

Kudos to the Ryle kids and coaches. I know that some have questioned some calls by Ryle's coaching staff. I'd have done the same the coaches did. I think the coaches realized that their D wasn't going to stop the Birds O and were doing every thing they could to keep the ball out of our hands. A gamble no doubt, but a gamble worth taking. I came away from the game with the feeling that Ryle's D wasn't going to be able to stop our O whether we got the ball on our 5 or on Ryle's 5, so it didn't really matter where we got possession. We didn't punt once the entire game that I can recall.

 

Of course HHS didn't punt. Did they ever start a drive in their own territory?

 

Seriously, not punting in those situations is like just handing a good offensive team points and it also tells your own defense that you don't believe in them. Make the field as long as possible, make them run extra plays and hope for a mistake. Plus you limit HHS's possessions by punting because they burn more time going 70 yards instead of 50 (or 20). I think Ryle's coach will play it differently next time.

Let me see if I can put this in perspective. Highlands beats a fired-up, quality 6A opponent on their field, and it just doesn't live up to your expectations? You are tough.:ohbrother:

 

Yes, there are things to work on, and in about 9 hours, the coaches and team will get to work on whatever they need to do to improve.

 

I am tough. The amount of talent on this team, coupled with the speed, strength and offseason training, I thought they would be off to the races early this season. IMO, so far, it's not showing and AC said as much in the paper this morning. The players obviously expected more and I think THEY are a little let down so far. A win is a win I guess, but the effort so far this season will not be one that takes them to an undefeated season. It will be a one loss season, and I think most Bird fans know who that loss will be to. With that being said, I think Dale and Co. will get it done over the next few weeks and step up the intensity in practice and against the Tigers.:clap:

Ryle had their own miscues too - interceptions and a fumble inside their own five. You beat us fair and square. You were the better team without question. But please don't take this "it should have been much worse" tone. It's not only inaccurate, but comes off as rather petty.

 

Agreed. Highlands had a little trouble w/ the passing game until they just blitzed the pants off of Ryle. If they can adjust to the blitz, the next game could be a little better, but so much happens b/n now and October.
