There was an offsetting unsportsmanlike penalty call. So, there obviously was a lot of heat on both sides of the ball.

Pretty sure Ryle fumbled inside HHS 10 yard line early.

 

Seems to me this game could have been a lot closer. I expect the rematch to be closer.

 

Either way HHS showed their dominance of NKY again.

Ryles players were pretty impressive. Their coaching staff was a different story. The bonehead calls in the first half quite frankly put Ryle beyond the 8 ball. I enjoyed watching one of the Ryle coaches run up and down the sidelines acting as if he were competing in a national cheerleading competition. Hey coach football is a lot like a horse race. You don't see a jockey stand up on the horse and start cheering just because he's ahead at the first quarter pole. Instead he stays focused because he knows he's got a long way to go. Being aggressive is one thing, but that was simply very bad play calling in the first half.

 

He's Ryle's motivational coach and a first-class guy. He was trying to get the players and fans excited. Hardly anything wrong with that. What? You can't cheer or show emotion until the game is over or well in hand?

 

The play calling issues are open for debate. It's one of those things where if it's works, you're a genius and if it doesn't, you get second-guessed - and maybe rightfully so. Personally, I would like to see Ryle mix up the pass and run a bit more on offense. They seemed to run exclusively at times, then pass exclusively at times. A little more balance would probably be helpful.

The coach you are referring to doesn't coach any position. He is a pastor that works with team. He keeps the boys pumped up during the game and does a tremendous amount of other things for the program.

I don't want to get into a griping match, but can I ask why it shouldn't be brought up? THis thread is about the game recap and that happened during the game.

Wow! I was definitely impressed with Ryle. After watching the replay of the CovCath Ryle game last night, I thought there was no way they would do what they did tonight against the Birds. CovCath must really be down this year.

 

Ryle's first drive was a thing of beauty. The only thing I noticed along with many others was the way 34 was huffing and puffing after every run. That right there was not a good sign for them. Curious, how many yards did Elliott have after that first drive? He is a strong runner and can hit that corner very quick.

 

HHS first drive was just as impressive. It looked like this was going to be a shootout. But then Kaboom! Ryle Coach decides he needs to go for it on 4th down and they don't make it at mid-field. Not a good move especially against a team like HHS when they can strike in a heart beat and it's over. And after that, it was pretty much over.

 

Now on the posters saying it could have been worse or not. Yes the score, but for both teams. If Ryle scores on their own miscues and HHS make their plays, the score is somewhere around 55-28. That would be saying something for Ryle, scoring 28 against HHS. Oh, there is your 50 points.

 

Does any HHS fan know where #45 was for them tonight? Saw him early but not so much the remainder of the game. Was there an injury?

J.A. text messaged all the play by play to me, so that we could keep all of BGP updated on the game. He gave great descriptions of the big plays and made the game come alive in the update thread.

It is true the score could have been worse but it wasn't. The Highlands receivers took a little hit having Collinsworth in the backfield but that move sure is paying off. I think it really hurts that Roller wasn't playing any receiver as well is this permanent? There isn't a throw Bardo can't make.

 

Ryle hung around in the first half they just simply gave up huge runs too Highlands. Highlands just had too many athletes and the Ryle passing game clearly is not polished. They are a run first team.

 

I understand being aggressive but the fake punt and not converting on 4th early hurt Ryle. You cannot give Highlands the ball in good field position.

HHS just took the Raiders to school and stopped their tough run game. But Oscar is right; the Birds just are not clicking on offense as I expected so far this season--not compared to the reports on the offseason passing game, expected to send the scoreboard into overdrive. I'd take last season's offense over this one...SO FAR. I think that is due to change soon. It better, or I think ST. X will beat up on the Birds. :irked:

Yes, there are things to work on, and in about 9 hours, the coaches and team will get to work on whatever they need to do to improve.

Highlands has some very nice misdirection running plays. It was hard to tell from the stands sometimes who had the ball. My son just got home and said Collinsworth was the quickest kid he's ever come up against and that his changes of direction were deadly. Manual must indeed be pretty solid (and fast) defensively if they held him under 80 yards last week. Have to say I wasn't overly impressed with the HHS WR's tonight. Maybe just an off night for them, but there were a couple of drops and I didn't see anyone with great speed.

With numbers 34 and 8 I would be too. I tell you, having that big target at tight end will polish that passing game in a hurry. That's certainly a nice option to have out there.

Ryle should have utilized Nichols more than they did, it might have opened up their running game a little more.

Highlands is the better team but Ryle's coaching let them down. Should have been a good game.

Your son is 100% accurate. Collinsworth is like the matrix in the open field. I also agree with the receivers from HHS that was the point I made earlier with the dropped balls. Remember they took probably the best receiver in the state and put him in the backfield though. Then again if your rushing for 4 TD's you wont need to pass that much. Is Roller not on offense anymore?

I thought Ryle caught a very bad break on the spot of the 4th down play near midfield late in the second half. One official had it spotted a full yard further than the other official, which would have given Ryle a first down. As it was, Ryle turns the ball over on downs and Highlands strikes for a second quick TD late in the quarter and builds their lead to 20-7. By no means am I claiming this could have changed the outcome of the game - Highlands wins regardless - but it would have been nice for Ryle to go into half down 14-7 or perhaps to even tie it up at 14. Just one of those things . . .
