CatsCatsCats Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 Guys, I've been collecting stats from 15 of the top programs of all-time, trying to determine who truly is number 1. You here the arguments for Notre Dame, but I'm not so sure that is the case. I think that "Prestige" is something that in many cases was built before any of us were born, and should only be part of the argument. So my question to you is...WHO IS THE GREATEST COLLEGE FOOTBALL PROGRAM OF ALL-TIME? Please give some specifics.
pigman Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 Not much before Bear got there, but Alabama would have to be up there along with Oklahoma.
buzzer beater Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 Notre Dame Ohio State USC Alabama Michigan(as bad as I hate to say it) Texas
CincySportsFan Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 Notre Dame Ohio State USC Alabama Michigan(as bad as I hate to say it) Texas Is that the order you would rank them, or just your top 6? Either way, it's not a bad list. Some of the others that I think could be considered would be: Penn State Florida State Oklahoma Nebraska But, these may not have the lengthy history that the others have had. Gonna be hard to pick just one...but I'll stick with my Bucks!

That would be a pretty solid list of schools :thumb:
Alabama Larry Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 Alabama..no one even close. I'll prove my points later.
CatsCatsCats Posted May 5, 2009 Author Posted May 5, 2009 So far with what I've got: If you want to overall excellence five schools stand alone -Notre Dame -Bama -Oklahoma -USC -Michigan If you want consistency throughout then it goes to either USC or Oklahoma or Michigan. If you are talking about the modern era, my team, the Miami Hurricanes has to be somewhere near the top. In the modern era, in which the media gives us a chance to see more teams, thus giving more teams a shot for the title, not team matches the Canes 5 titles. I will publish a top 10 later when I run all the stats, but other teams that will be in there are Texas, Ohio State, Nebraska, and possibly Penn State, Florida, and others. To me Florida State cannot crack the top 10. They have the 3rd most tradition in the state of Florida. They have been better longer than UF, but UF's overall dominance in SEC title games, and having more championships would put them ahead of them. FSU wasn't much before Bowden, no UF consistently before Spurrier, nor Miami before Schnelly.
Hatz Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 Those I think of right away: Alabama. They had some great teams in the 30's long before the Bear. They reached new heights with his arrival. Notre Dame. Knute Rockne, Frank Layhe (sp?), Parsegian (sp?), Holtz, et al. Heismans, National Titles and mystique for the big upsets. Oklahoma. National Titles in the 40's, 50's, 70's, 80's and 00's. Longest winning streak in history. Great coaches: Wilkinson, Fairbanks, Switzer, Stoops. USC. TB U. Heismans, National titles, rivalries (UCLA, Notre Dame) and coaches (Jones,McKay, Robinson, Carroll). Mike Garrett, O.J. Simpson, Anthony Davis, Ricky Bell, Charles White, Marcus Allen, Reggie Bush. Michigan. Not as many National Titles as others but consistent. Also one of the top all time in wins. Ohio State. Buckeyes also have tradition that is 60 or more years old. Woody, Archie Griffin, Hopalong Cassady, Pete Johnson, Kevin Byars, et al. Not as many National crowns as the top four but always in the hunt. Texas. Surprise. They are the third all time winningest program in history. They have National Titles in four seasons. Like all great programs, they have numerous near misses as well. Darrell Royal, Earl Campbell, Ricky Williams, and inventors of the wishbone offense. :thumb:
GO CATS Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 Alabama..no one even close. I'll prove my points later. Says the die hard Alabma fan...
Hearsay Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 Hard to argue with USC from past to present. I've always loved the way this video ties past and present together.
The Big Apple Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 Notre Dame, USC, Alabama, Penn state and Oklahoma, In that order.
CatsCatsCats Posted May 6, 2009 Author Posted May 6, 2009 Notre Dame, USC, Alabama, Penn state and Oklahoma, In that order. No way shape, form, or fashion is Penn State top 5 in my opinion. They have won 2 National Titles. TWO! That has to count for something. Michigan has 11 claimed national titles though the number of official is smaller because of lack of National Title consistency pre-1950's, a record 42 conference championships, most wins, best win percentage, 3 Heisman winners, 150 All-Americans. They cannot be #1 because they only have one title since 1948, but they have to be over Penn State.
