May 8, 200917 yr True, but many teams have had their scandals. True but they have had more then their share.
May 8, 200917 yr USC also claims 11 national championships, although the 1928 and 1939 titles are disputed. And I've heard the split-title crap about 2003, you don't have to repeat it, but it was an AP title. Ohio State would win if the band is considered :ylsuper:
May 8, 200917 yr Based on a comparison of the same criteria, here is my list: Alabama: 12 National Championships; 0 Heisman Trophies; 25 Conference Championships; .709 winning percentage; 31-22-3 bowl record Notre Dame: 11 National Championships; 7 Heisman Trophies; No Conference: .736 winning percentage; 14-15 bowl record USC: 11 National Championships; 38 PAC Ten Championships; 7 Heisman Trophies; .717 winning percentage; 31-16 bowl record Michigan: 11 National Championships; 42 Conference Championships; 3 Heisman Trophies; .740 winning percentage; 19-20 bowl record :puke: Ohio State: 7 National Championships; 33 Big Ten Championships; 7 Heisman Trophies; .716 winning percentage; 18-22 bowl record :thumb: Oklahoma: 7 National Championships; 42 Conference Championships; 5 Heisman Trophies; .693 winning percentage; 24-17-1 bowl record Nebraska: 5 National Championships; 46 conference Championships; 3 Heisman Trophies; .707 winning percentage; 23-22 bowl record Texas: 4 National Championships; 29 Conference Championships; 2 Heisman Trophies; .724 winning percentage; 23-21-2 bowl record Below these eight the teams average in the mid .600s for winning percentage and 2 national titles (Penn State, Georgia, Florida, etc…)

Can't do it. The U has 5 national titles. 4 other seasons they were very close to winning other consensus titles. They have only been in a conference since 92 and won 9 Big East Titles when it was still a conference. 552-307-19 record all-time or 64.2 %.. Since 1979 they are 279-82, or 77.3%. They did this in the modern era, which should really get them into the top 5. They are the top program since the 70's with 5 titles. And they did this at a small private school.:thumb: The U doesn't have to be #1 but don't insult them by placing the likes of Penn State, Florida or Georgia over them. Especially Florida. The team that won't play the Canes or wouldn't play the Seminoles before the state of Florida jumped in. Miami leads the series, and the game last year ended a 6 game drought, which due to mainly Steve Spurrier and Jeremy Foley lasted about 23 years. Florida cannot hold a candle to Miami. Maybe they are better now, but not as an overall program.

The question was “who is the best team of ALL-TIME”, not the best team since 1979. Miami was included in the “etc…” part of my comment. The main reason they are not ranked with my top eight is they have 280 fewer wins then Texas and only 9 fewer losses and their winning percentage is in the mid .600s. Edited May 8, 200917 yr by FC

May 9, 200917 yr Not possible. You have too many future pro starters on that defense, it was a great defense that just wasn't speedy. Sure, DJ Williams was a OLB that was faster than many RB's, but he could stick. Vilma could stick it as well as anyone, as the snail of the back 7 (4.65). Absolutely not. I love the '95 Huskers, they are my favorite non- Miami or UK team, but they would have had their hands full. They would have looked at a bunch of 3rd and longs and that doesn't bode well with Reed, and Phillip Buchanon, Mike Rumph when they were in college. I don't know how well the black-shirts would match up when the Canes had the ball either. Portis was so tough in college, but Gore was the best RB that year IMO. Before his two ACL tears he was the total package, about 9 yards per carry that year. Had he not gotten hurt, we may have never of known about Willis McGahee. Plus, Shockey, Andre Johnson, Dorsey, two first team All-American tackles in Gonzalez and Bryant McKinnie. The Non-starters on that Canes team included: Sean Taylor, Antrell Rolle, Vernon Carey, Kelly Jennings, Rocky McIntosh, Roscoe Parrish, along with Gore and McGahee. I don't see how any team can match up. The Canes had one close game, VT, but the Hokies made a great run to make that one close. The completely dominated Nebraska, running off to a 34-0 lead in the title game, before Coker let up. They could have set some major records in that game, had sportsmanship been lacking. With a run it up coach like Urban Meyer, Stoops, or Spurrier they would have left 70 on the board on the Huskers. Many will argue '61 Bama or 71 Nebraska, but that is a different era. I think the two teams were are arguing for take those teams to the woodshed. Different level of athlete, size, speed, playing style. Don't forget about BC, the Canes were very fortunate to pull that one out.

With the amount of media, recruiting and things that go into the game now it is totally different than say the 1940's? How much trouble do you think Notre Dame had recruiting in the 50's? Or Michigan, or many of these other teams? Not hard. Different game. For that reason Miami is in the top consideration because they are the undisputed team of the modern era. They built their dynasty from scratch and survived sanctions in the 90's to build the greatest amount of talent on one team the college world has ever seen. Modern era has to be looked at as a different thing and has to be factored seperately.

That's the truth, I remember when they were destroyed by McNabb, one thing is certain, Butch Davis did some wonderful recruiting. I believe at one point they had 47 NFL'ers over a four year stretch, that is flat out sick.
May 9, 200917 yr There are several songs that refer to Alabama, and even a Gospel song..."Sin had left a "Crimson" stain. Famous Movies.... May 9, 200917 yr PAC TEN does not have nothing on the SEC. Sorry but now its hard to come out of the SEC to win a Championship.
May 10, 200917 yr PAC TEN does not have nothing on the SEC. Sorry but now its hard to come out of the SEC to win a Championship. That is true now, but has not always been the case. The Pac-10 (or foremerly Pac-8) was considered very, very strong in the 60's, 70's, and 80's.
May 10, 200917 yr Author That is true now, but has not always been the case. The Pac-10 (or foremerly Pac-8) was considered very, very strong in the 60's, 70's, and 80's. It's true, but I think the SEC can be overrated. All teams are tough, but many teams play schedules that are just as tough in other conferences. Many SEC teams...cough.cough...FLORIDA..cough, play pathetic non-conference schedules. Look at UF's regular season schedule. Is that the schedule the #1 team should play? They play at the most 1 possible title contender in LSU, and possibly no other teams that will break the top 10. Weak schedule, but they try to do it every year and it is justified because they play in the SEC which is crap. A Florida court ruling is the only thing that keeps their non-conference schedule from having 4 cupcakes, instead of the 3 they play, as the court ruled they had to play FSU. This is what the SEC does a lot. I'm sorry but if you are a title contender teams like Mississippi State and Vandybilt should not be too tough that you cannot gather atleast two decent non-conference opponents. SEC's the best but it is not the only legit conference in the country.
