May 11, 200917 yr Ok, between 1980 – 2003 Miami would be ranked one top two or three college football programs. Prior to 1981…not so much.
May 11, 200917 yr Author Ok, between 1980 – 2003 Miami would be ranked one top two or three college football programs. Prior to 1981…not so much. Neither would FSU, if someone is going to place FSU in top 10 discussion you cannot fail to mention Miami. And since 1980 no other program is in Miami's league.
May 11, 200917 yr History is history. You can't pick and chose time frames. So all of Miami's success is since 1979. Big deal. It's still success and I will submit, success in a time where there is much more parity in the game. There are way fewer scholarships. Schools (Bama comes to mind) used to sign players to scholarships, just to hide them from other schools. These things were common place in the first century of college football. I also submit that since 1979, those traditional powers listed haven't kept up with the Canes. Do I think Miami is the best program of all time? Of course not, but to summarily discount them, just because they're success came late is just as ridicules.

Almost all of Michigan and Ohio State's Titles came before 1955 when several teams could, and did, lay claim to the Title every year. Why should Miami's Titles get any less emphasis. Miami's modern success shouldn't be held against them any more than the fact the OSU and Michigan have only won 1 Title each since the Ford Administration.

People discount recent titles, and it's tougher to win now than ever. How hard do you think it was to get kids to come to OSU, Michigan, Notre Dame, USC in the old days? Not hard. Now a days, kids can play at lesser programs and have great success. 5 titles since 83 is impressive, and to me, even if it weren't the Canes, just as impressive as anyone elses. The U is a small, poor, private school. Key words are poor and small, they had no chance for success until the modern era. I would put the who's who of Miami up against just about anyone, even though most come in the so-called modern era. Not saying they are the best, but they are a top 7 program or higher.

No, I don't think they deserve the top spot but they belong in the top 10 for sure. What is so impressive to me is the fact that they were able to become a Top 10 team year in, year out no matter who the coach was. They have had a couple of down times but overall they are the dominant program of the last 30 years.
May 12, 200917 yr So who is #1? Alabama, Notre Dame, USC? I don't think you could go wrong with any of those but there's no good way to pick just one. They would be my top 3.
May 12, 200917 yr Author So who is #1? Alabama, Notre Dame, USC? I would say USC after some research. Sorry I've been so slow with the report. Work is killin' me.
May 12, 200917 yr I defended why Bama is the All time great, if someone disagrees and wants to add their team, do as I did. You just can't say a team with out solid eveidence so I can debate your facts. Bama 5-2 against USC. ND two bowl wins since 1993. Ohio State/Michigan two titles sisnce 1968.....That was an example.

I think Notre Dame has the most prestige, but to me that is different than who is the top program.

History is history – exactly my point. The original question was the best team of all time, not since 1980. Why should Miami’s success in a twenty year time span be considered more relevant than any other team’s success throughout their entire history? Not discounting recent titles/success, only considering the entire body of work. May 12, 200917 yr 7? where did y'all get that. How about 12 and here they are 1925.10-0 beat Washington in the rose Bowl 1926 9-0-1 beat Stanford Rose Bowl back to back 1930 10-0 Rose bowl beat Washington State 1934 10-0 Rose Bowl beat Stanford 1941 9-2 Cotton Bowl beat Texas A&M 1961 11-0 Sugar Bowl beat Arkansas 1964 10-1 Orange Bowl lost to Texas NC was awared before the Bowls. 1966 ND 9-0-1 Bama 11-0 equals out doesn't it. 1965 Orange Bowl 9-1-1 beat Nebraska 1973 Sugar Bowl 11-1 lost to ND again vote before the game..which to be fair I don't count this one we lost, but history has us. 1978 11-1 Sugar Bowl Penn State got beat 1979 12-0 back to back beat Arkansas Sugar Bowl 1993 12-0 Miami got beat Sugar bowl. Once you win a Championship it is etched in stone no matter when it was won...still counts my friends. Larry, do you really count the one's bolded in your mind? I'm not calling it out just saying there's some pretty good evidence to the contrary. 1941: How does a 2 loss team get named National Champions? 1964: They were awarded prior to the bowls and finished 10-1 and the Texas team they lost to was Defending National Champ, lost by 1 to Arkansas, and likewise finished 10-1. 1965: Michigan State was unbeaten I believe going into the Rose Bowl and lost to a UCLA team they beat earlier in the year. That Spartan team was loaded with Webster, Bubba Smith and Washington. 1966: Legitimate argument for the Kenny Stabler team. However Notre Dame and Michigan State played that 10-10 TV game and that was the hype difference. Those were some I look at as worth debating on who the best team really may have been in those seasons.

USC was hardly known prior to the 1950's. And to call Miami and "poor private school" is a stretch. A degree from Miami in southern Florida is analogous to a degree from USC in Los Angeles.

A degree from Miami in southern Florida is analogous to a degree from USC in Los Angeles. USC has titles in the late 20's and 30's, hows that unknown? They have plenty of history. As for Miami, the degrees are the same, the price is the same, but Miami is a poor school. Look at the size of USC and compare it to Miami.
