As I read the posts on this thread I can't help but wonder how those 3rd and 4th seeded teams that made it to the 2nd and 3rd rounds (or farther) feels about people on here saying they should not have even been in the playoffs?

Oh, and westsider keep holding on to the dream about KY being a basketball state because it is slowly changing. I keep praying for UK to win 1 national title because that would really shake things up. Oh yea, Commonwealth stadium is completely maxed out on Saturdays for every home football game no matter the weather. I think the casual fan attendence is growing each year for the championship games and I agree if the KHSAA made it as big of deal as they make the sweet 16 the fan base would grow to enormous numbers. IMO! :ylsuper:

Hey, it ain't my dream ... it's just reality.

No matter how hard football people try, the state championships will never become as big as the Sweet 16, which is an event with tradition and much more than just a basketball tournament ... it's one giant reunion of people from all corners of Kentucky.

Two sessions of the Sweet 16 drew 21,000 fans ... the only time it happens at the state football finals is when Trinity meets St. Xavier in Louisville. And the December weather plays a big role in that.

Yea, you may be right but you better hope corn-hole doesn't get sanctioned as a KHSAA sport or the tide will definately turn away from B-ball!

Seriously though:

Extend spring practice by another week (or two.) I like the idea of starting in April for all schools and not based on the end of each schools' basketball season. Every school playing a full scrimage at the end of this time is good also.

Bring back June passing leagues. I agree with RAM that it was a good way to get the boys acclimated to the weather and also improve conditioning.

I would like all schools to start contact on the same date, regardless of their school start date. (Two weeks after the start of summer practice.)

Let schools schedule when they want to play their district games, it should not be mandated.

(It seems like their is a growing consensus on what needs to be changed for the benefit of KY Highschool football!!)

The sweet 16 is a big event. But if basketball is as big as you say and people come from all corners of Kentucky to attend then why did they move away from alternating between Lexington and Louisville?

I say do away with the off week that way the season can get finished the 1st weekend of December.

Go to a 5 class system. I think his would help a lot of problems with travel and hopefully eliminate 0-10 teams making the playoffs.

Bring back the June 7 on 7 stuff. Teams that want towrok and want to build a great program use this time wisely. I am guessing this is probably supported by lazy coaches who don't want to have to coach in June and don't want anyone else too either. I know some basketball coaches supported the idea too, but I heard a lot of football coaches were for it.

As for the state championship games, I don't know exactly how you make it like the Sweet 16. Its outdoors in December. Thats tough to draw a ton of fans in.

Everyone will probably spit on me for even mentioning it, but I think it would be a lot more exciting for KY to have a bowl system. Oh the fun we would have then.

Playoffs- Personally I would rather have a district championship between the Top 2 teams in the district and have classes broken into 16 regions (with 4 districts per region) like basketball across all classes. So all the district champs would play each other in Regional playoffs and then the 16 regional champions would advance to the state playoffs in each class. This gives you 7 weeks of playoffs.

Classes-I think we should trim down to five classes- six is too many and four wasn't enough IMO.

Scheduling- I also think the season should start the first Friday in August whether school on are in session or not. People will come. Doesn't matter if school is in or not. Every team should play 10 straight weeks. By this year's calendar that makes Week 10 October 9th. Then the teams would get one bye week before the playoffs and the District Championships would be on October 23rd. Two weeks for Regional playoffs (4 districts per region) and 4 weeks for State playoffs makes the State title game on first weekend of December and weather-wise far more accessible to more fans.

I am admittedly not as well versed in this stuff than 90% of you so my plan is likely highly impossible, but I really think as a lay fan the whole cross districting and what not in the early rounds is completely ridiculous and makes no sense to me.

Anyway just my two cents.

I would say to finish first or second in your district. As wonderful as a story it may be for a 3 and 4 seed to make it in the playoffs, it is the complete opposite for the teams that make it in with 0 wins. I really dislike the fact in the majority of our districts, it is not an accomplishment to make the playoffs.

Teams around Rupp, Freedon Hall, BOK, etc. start high school arena football. Championship held at Rupp. How many athletes could play arena football that might not be able to make it to the NFL. Goofy, ridiculus idea! I know, but it is an idea.

Do not allow teams with losing records within their districts into the post season tournament........

OK, I'll play along. I know the catch phrase is "during the school year", but basketball has open gyms all summer long and has other leagues to sharpen the players skills like AAU, I know that you are going to say AAU is not a part of the school, but coaches know that their players will get plenty of practice and sharpen their skills in the off season. Basketball is year around.

Baseball, though not school affiliated, it year around also, with summer leagues and fall leagues, again coaches know that their player will be sharpening their skills in the off season.

Football players do not have such opportunities outside of the school program. You can't go to the park and play a pick up football game, not two hand touch, but actual football. You can't play in leagues all over the place to get better. You have to get better with the school team, and practice time has to be allotted. That is the only time you get to practice football.

:thumb: Colleges have spring practice & game/scrimmage for the very same reason.

Do not allow teams with losing records within their districts into the post season tournament........

Can we do the same for all sports? If not, then I am not for it.
