Kentucky Football - What Would You Change?

Featured Replies

I see your point, but essentially basketball does it with the district tournaments in only taking the top two teams to regionals.

As in basketball only 1 team comes out of every football region!

Making the playoffs shouldn't be the accomplishment, WINNING something in the playoffs should be. Frankly I question the motivations of programs that would think "Well we didn't take the region, but we DID make the playoffs!"

I find that thought to be quite pathetic.`

This is one of the best post I've seen in regarding the state of Football in KY. Making the playoffs isn't a big deal, especially in KY. Just about everyone makes it. So I see no problem with how it is now. I don't think it will go back to 2 teams per district because too many people take stock into just making the playoffs and would complain. Programs that are building or rebuilding should probably shoot for a winning season or playoffs, but I think if schools tried to go higher and higher with their goals the overall level of Football in KY would improve. If you are the four seed one year, shoot for a home playoff game and atleast one win the next, and keep going up. You won't always reach your goals, but continuing to raise the bar will improve alot of programs.

Spring practice should be a set time as stated. 15 days, or three school weeks, with the option of scrimmaging another team on day 15. Would be a great experience, a good chance to see who's improved and what needs to be worked on, not to mention a nice money maker. Maybe each team does a home and home with another so they both have a chance to get the gate and concession money or some kind of financial split of some kind. Make it a big event at the schools.

Passing leagues should be back. I think they are a little overrated, but they can be a very good tool if used properly.

State championship back in Louisville, or in Lexington. Though I'm sure the WKY population will make a nice showing at the title games, the causual fan from central or EKY isn't going to go to Bowling Green to watch teams they don't root for.

Finally, look at the football states...Texas, Florida, Cali, Ohio, Pennsylvania, etc. and try to see what they do different and try to implement it. We as a whole won't be at that level in the near future but it is something to shoot for.

I understand that, ... but IMHO, you can't let every team in every sport in the playoffs except football. They all should be treated the same in that regards, ... but haven't for years.

With that mindset, we should class every sport -- which I think they should do anyway

First, we need to realize that fooball and basketball are entirely different sports. Bad teams make the NCAA tournament all the time, it's the nature of the sport, that's why it's called March Madness. You can't play football every other day, either. 2nd, football really can't start any earlier because of the heat. I agree too many teams are in the playoffs, it needs to be the top 2 teams in each district. There also needs to be only 5 classes (I was also ok with 4). Spring ball can stay 15 to get 10, but it needs to be pushed back in the year because of the weather. Maybe the 3 weeks after spring break, or let each coach choose it,etc. Coaches are allowed an intra squad scrimmage now, keep it that way. Letting them play some one else is a disaster waiting to happen.

I agree that each sport needs to be classed. I thought we were headed that way when the All A started like 20 years ago, but apparently not.

I'd change letting the KHSAA decide what is good and what is not good for high school football in Kentucky.

The state's high schools make all the KHSAA rules.

Who should decide? The fans?

As an addendum I also look at that the same way I do a certain football coach saying "We just won the public school championship" before moving on to face Trinity in the finals. There is no public school champion, there is a single state champion and anyone who says otherwise is a fool.

I am sorry...was there a trophy and medals awarded ??? I missed that.

In looking at things that I would like to see changed with football there really isn't a whole lot. I can understand not wanting teams with losing records to make the playoffs but as I said before I don't think that simply making the playoffs should be considered an accomplishment.

For the most part, I think the only thing I would change would be the format of the playoffs. I would like to see it seeded in order to try to let the best teams meet in the finals regardless of where they are in the state. I think it is unfortunate that sometimes teams like CovCath and Highlands end up knocking each other out of the playoffs and then proceed to a cake walk in the final game. The same goes for the other classes as well. If Belfry and Breathitt County are the best teams in a class then I would rather see them make the finals than Belfry and O-Cath.

I know it is an unfeasible goal though. Especially given what it would do to travel costs. I just would like to avoid seeing blowouts in the title games at all costs.

On what basis do we seed the teams? Power ratings? Polls? Given how people constantly gripe on those, it would never gain universal acceptance. Best to do it geographically.

How many blowouts have we had in two seasons of six-class football? We had two in 2007 and two in 2008, and one of those would have been prevented if the KHSAA had treated 6A like it did the other five classes.

I know and acknowledged that it was indeed largely unfeasible but I wasn't trying to limit it to the 6-class era. Breathitt-Corbin in 2002 was a good example, in a seeded tournament you don't likely end up with a 51-0 blowout.

I am aware that the idea has limitations and short of a dedicated committee on each class you probably could not seed it effectively. Honestly I think that there are a number of posters on BGP that could easily be good, collectively, at such seeding. The problem you run into though is that it is just too difficult to gauge levels of competition when a season is only 10 games. If football season were longer and there was more cross competition across the state then maybe it would have a clearer image. I do admit though that it is a pipe dream.

Here's what we can do:

Take the top 2 from a District in the playoffs.

The teams that don't make the playoffs can play in the "Kentucky Football Classic Playoffs," teams from across the state can participate so it could be a true cross section of KY football. Then the winner can call themselves a state champion too... :sssh:

You just never stop, do you ...

I say that next year, some of us get together and kidnap you, take you to Richmond and force you to watch all 30 games of the All A Classic.

I would like to see a change in game times. I'm talking about those games in August, September, and sometimes October when heat is an issue. Why not schedule those games when heat is a threat to kickoff @ 9PM on Friday nights or have them on Saturday @ 8AM? I would be there if they kicked off @ 2AM. :D Just a thought.

I would go down to 3 classes, maybe 4. I would also only take two teams per district in to the playoffs.
