I keep hearing that so many want to cut back the number of teams in the playoffs. Would those same people be willing for EVERY sport, .. including basketball, to do the same thing? If not, then where is the equity?

I see your point, but essentially basketball does it with the district tournaments in only taking the top two teams to regionals.

When teams with losing records within their districts go to the post season tournament. This sends the wrong message...I would be for it in other sports as well, but we are primarily speaking of Football.:taz:

But that is the postseason. You can go 0-25 and get a fresh start in the playoffs. The 4 team football districts have that problem as well, but any district with 5 or more teams does not. If we are going to cut football even more, then let the other sports do the same and just take their top 2 district teams to the postseason.

I understand that, ... but IMHO, you can't let every team in every sport in the playoffs except football. They all should be treated the same in that regards, ... but haven't for years.

That is because it impossible to replicate the amount of games in football as there are with other sports.

 

It is the exact same premise as with college athletics and the ability to have conference tournaments for hoops, baseball, etc. but it is just not feasible in football.

 

With limited exceptions, the first round has become a joke for a couple of reasons.

 

1) The humiliating losses some of these 0-10, 1-9 teams have to endure

 

and

 

2) Being talked about as one of the handful of teams that does not qualify for the playoffs or being talked about because you are one of the handful of teams that made the playoffs with an 0-10 record.

I would say to finish first or second in your district. As wonderful as a story it may be for a 3 and 4 seed to make it in the playoffs, it is the complete opposite for the teams that make it in with 0 wins. I really dislike the fact in the majority of our districts, it is not an accomplishment to make the playoffs.

 

 

Making the playoffs shouldn't be the accomplishment, WINNING something in the playoffs should be. Frankly I question the motivations of programs that would think "Well we didn't take the region, but we DID make the playoffs!"

I have seen some pretty humiliating losses in the first round of other sports playoffs (basketball included) as well. Anytime you have 0-fer or single digit win teams in any playoff format that can happen. All the more reason to limit it in those sports as well.

 

You are right about the number of games, but on the flip side the other sports get tons more games during the regular season.

 

I say if you are going to do this in football (eg take only the top 2 teams in each district), then let's do the same in every other sport and make it consistent. However, we all know that this will never happen as we continue to try and knock more teams in KY out of one more football game. I know when I played football, only the top team in each district made the playoffs. I would have LOVED to have played just one more game, even if my team got thumped, for another chance to score another TD, intercept another pass or just knock someone's head off, etc. I loved to play the game no matter who the opponent. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to take that away from any kid in any sport, ... but I don't like limiting the number of teams ONLY in football and depriving those kids of one more game.

And football is the only sport with a class system. Take basketball, baseball, softball or any other sport to a class system and if it is similar to football then the winner and runnerup of each sub section (or whatever you want to call it) is the only ones in the playoff.

Heres the difference. A district game for basketball will typically be between teams on average 20 to 30 minutes a part. A district game in football could be much worse. The example I like to use is Lawrence Co. being 3 1/2 hours from Bell Co. with an 0-10 record having to come play in the 1st round of the playoffs. Now I am all for 4 teams from each district making the playoffs, I just think that if you cut it down to 5 classes then this would help out a lot.

I say do away with the off week that way the season can get finished the 1st weekend of December.

 

Go to a 5 class system. I think his would help a lot of problems with travel and hopefully eliminate 0-10 teams making the playoffs.

 

Bring back the June 7 on 7 stuff. Teams that want towrok and want to build a great program use this time wisely. I am guessing this is probably supported by lazy coaches who don't want to have to coach in June and don't want anyone else too either. I know some basketball coaches supported the idea too, but I heard a lot of football coaches were for it.

 

 

 

As for the state championship games, I don't know exactly how you make it like the Sweet 16. Its outdoors in December. Thats tough to draw a ton of fans in.

 

I agree with the 5 class system for sure. That would most likely move McCreary out of Bell Co's district and anything that does that is good for me!

Allow high school teams to play college teams, if they want to.
