Scott was very impressive. They ran with Holmes the entire game. I do not have a stat sheet but believe Scott scored more points in transition than the Bulldogs. As the season winds down to the Districts, Region and Sweet 16, I think Holmes is going to miss the leadership they enjoyed when Arrez Henderson was running the show. I know the common wisdom is that Holmes' 08-09 is the best team to come out of the 9th in a long, long time. I think last year's Holmes team was better.

Defensively, yes. Offensively, not even close. This year's team is much better on offense.

Arrez Henderson, Braeon Avery, Josh Nelson & Terrance Clark were pretty solid offensive players. And, if the players had started to lose it last year like they did today in Taylor Mill, Arrez Henderson would have taken care of business. Pittman came very close...and probably should have... picked up a T while waiting for Smith to shoot his free throws with no time on the clock at the end of regulation. Arrez would never have let that happen. I remember Arrez during the Lex Cath semi-final game in Rupp when the Bulldogs went down double digits early. He took command. And I remember (all too painfully well) Arrez placing the dagger in Cov. Cath. in the 07 and 08 Regional finals. Pretty big shoes to fill.

Arrez is the only offensive player close to Riley, R. Johnson, J. Johnson, or Pittman this year.

 

Henderson v R. Johnson- Too tough to call. Rico is bigger and better from outside. Henderson was better defender and stronger.

Avery v Riley- Adv Riley...more consistent than Avery was

Nelson v J. Johnson- Adv J. Johnson...not even close

Clark v Pittman- Adv Pittman...Clark had no where near the all around game of Pittman and could only play down on the blocks. Physical around the rim though.

 

I wouldn't necessarily agree that they lost their composure today either. Didn't they win the game?? That's all that matters to be honest. As much as you just pointed out, Holmes was still able to pull out a W through adversity.

Here's a great little lesson for you that I've watched many time - any team is beatable on any given night. I wouldn't be so confident until I saw my team cutting the nets down.

 

As I recall back in '87, NewCath was unbeaten in Northern Ky and ranked in the top 10 in the state all year. Then lost to Highlands in the Regional final and ended up 28-4.

Just pointing out that you say they lost their composure and several players cracked under pressure but yet they were still able to win. IMO that shows high character, that they can have 3 players (Pittman, Riley, Arnold) who supposedly cracked under pressure but yet they still were able to get the W. BTW, Pittman was still the third leading scorer today with 10 points, despite sitting out two full quarters in regulation and all of OT. Riley finished with 12 points despite sitting out a full quarter.

 

Name one of the other team in nky that could have two of their top three leading scorers (Riley and Pittman) sit for a combined 4 quarters in a game and still win against Scott playing the way they did, on top of Scott being at home in front of a big crowd.

That Newcath team also had no where near the talent of this Holmes team and the 9th was a lot tougher back then than it is this year.

Again...no team in the 9th should knock Holmes off this year. We'll know more here in the next week when Holmes plays #3 Highlands Fri, top 20 Hazard sat, and At #2 Boone Mon.

Scott is a 10th region team...not 9th. No team in the 9th is going to beat them.
